Horizon West Middle School
HWMS Community Member,

Think about this . . . just a year ago, we were headed to spring break ready for a great week off and hopefully some fun in the sun. Then in a blink of an eye, COVID-19 become the word we would hear hundreds of times a day on the news. We have so much to reflect on in this last year and even more to be thankful for; MOST IMPORTANTLY our Horizon West family.

This last year has been changing every minute, yet our students, teachers and families have taken every challenge in stride and overcame it all. We are so privileged to have a culture of Hornets that are ready to take on each challenge and do their best every time.
We know everyone is excited for spring break, but we also want to make sure our Hornets stay safe. Keep social distancing, wear your masks and wash your hands. As soon as we get back we enter TESTING SEASON and have lots of fun events to wrap up the 2020-2021 school year.

Here are the highlights for this week.

Sincerely,

Michelle Thomas, Principal

Character Lab
Special March 25th event
At OCPS, student social and emotional well-being is a pillar of the district-wide 2025 Strategic Plan. To support this objective, OCPS has partnered with Character Lab since 2017, a nonprofit co-founded and led by Dr. Angela Duckworth, scientist, author, and professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Character Lab connects schools to leading researchers with shared interests to generate insights about developing the character strengths (like gratitude, curiosity, and growth mindset) that help all children thrive.

On March 25th, our school will participate in 30 minutes of research activities. Students complete these online, interactive activities individually on their school laptops, with a teacher available to support them. Horizon West Middle School will use data from these activities to identify and support the social, emotional, academic, and physical needs of our students. Participation in Character Lab activities is voluntary, and families may choose to opt their child out of participating. To learn more, visit ocps.net/clab.
