Since our last Newsletter in March...

Our first set of beautiful new homes were finished in October of 2025 but the inspections, paperwork and stamps of approval to allow us to be able to actually move in, have taken a very long time! Finally on, Wednesday, August 12th we were able to move the first set of excited residents into their new homes!

The ten residents living at our Arches location in Winston-Salem, have now joined the rest of us at our beautiful Rural Hall campus. We also moved two of the residents from our Atrium home just up the hill into the new homes. Our goal is to build two more "pods" (each made up of two six-bed homes and a staff building) that will form a semi-circle around our existing Atrium building so we can move everyone into more desirable, safe and healthy living spaces, because we beleive they deserve to live in a pleasant home just as much as you or I do.

On April 21st, members of the SECU Foundation Board attended a small event hosted by our Hope on the Horizons Capital Campaign Cabinet Co-Chairs, Pat and Nancy Grantham, to present us with a check for $1.5 million. It is to be used as a challenge grant for our Hope on the Horizons Capital Campaign to raise the funds needed for the Horizons Housing Initiative.

This is an incredible opportunity for people to support our campaign that will provide new desirable, safe and healthy living environments for our residents, and have their gift matched dollar for dollar. We are extremely grateful to all those whose helped make this happen. For more information on this project visit the Horizons Housing Initiative page.

This Spring, not one, but two of our residents, graduated from High School! We are so proud of them.

As they were leaving for graduation, Brandon and Alina were given a warm send off by all their Horizons family and then they got to roll across the stage and receive their diplomas!

We are grateful to all those who work with our school aged residents to give them the opportunity to receive an education, whether it be at a local high school, or here at Horizons with teachers provided by the WSFCS system.

Each year in Winston-Salem, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, hosts a very impressive festival that celebrates Greek culture with singing, dancing, a market and of course, lots of great food and drink. A few years ago, they decided that they would like to engage with local charities serving the greater Winston-Salem community and have a portion of the money collected as admission be donated to them.

This year, Horizons was selected to the be local charity that benefited from the proceeds and we are receiving $23,600 as a result!

One of the things Horizons is so proud of is our committmentment to helping our residents live meaningful lives. Just like you and I, they enjoy participating in things like attending the Annual Kiwanis Pancake Jamboree, or playing with their friends. They enjoy animals and parties too. Here are a few photos from the last couple of months of them doing just those things!

In April, Camino Bakery selected Horizons to the the recipient of their quarterly "Grounds for Good" event where they donate a portion of their sales from all their locations on that day to a local charity. We were very grateful to get the exposure as well as the money they raised for us. This time they raised $700!

And then in May we had another opportunity to raise funds and awareness for Horizons at Brouwerij DuBois who gave a portion of their sales to us, and they let Richard Anderson (our President and CEO) serve us from behind the bar! We also had some great raffle prizes to give away and we got to talk with a lot of really great people. That evening we raised almost $1,100!

We are always looking for opportunities like these, so if you know of any, just let us know!

Jane Price worked at Horizons for 39 years, but all good things must come to an end! If you know Jane, you'll know that she never wants a fuss made over her and is humble to the core. She just loved her "kids" and always wanted what was best for them. You cannot let someone who has poured their heart and sould into their work as she has done for decades, retire without any type of celebtation though, so we planed a small, secret luau-themed ice-cream party for her. Somehow we did manage to keep it a sectret and she did enjoy it!

Given the medical acuity of those we serve, it is not surprising that the majority of the funds used to operate our programs come from Medicaid. However, over the past decade or so, the increase in costs has far surpassed the increase in Medicaid rates, therefore we need to raise the funds needed to be able to continue our mission. Apart from the funds we received from the Greek Orthodox Church, we also appreciate the following support:

• Horizons was awarded $10,000 from Centenary United Methodist Church to go towards the cost of new ceiling lifts.

• We were also awarded $1,500 from the LAMB Foundation of NC



• We received a gift from Weeds and Seeds Garden Club for $2,250 as a result of their fundraising efforts

• We received two Community Grants from Forsyth County, one to fund our Summer Camp Program and one to fund our Respite Program.

• Additionally, we received $6,000 from St. Paul's Episcopal Church through their Stedman grant that will be used to help pay for the cost of physical therapy services to our residents.

We are very grateful to all those who support Horizons financially - thank you!

This spring, we had the help of MANY volunteers before, during and after our Putting fundraiser, as well as at the Greek Festival and also helping with outings, projects on campus and just spending time with our residents.

Over the summer we once again hosted several groups of young people from all around the country through the SPARK D'well program who volunteered in our day program. We love this partnership as it not only helps us out, but our residents leave an indelible mark on the hearts of the participants too, which they will carry out into the world with them. ·       Horizons gets money for the shoes we collect, from folks who ship them to developing nations.

·       The shoes are used as inventory for micro-enterprises selling footwear in their communities. 

·       Together we extend the life of the shoes and stop them from going to the landfill.

Please note, we can accept ANY type of shoes (heels, flip flops, soccer cleats, children’s shoes, boots, sneakers etc - as long as they are in usable condition and they are donated as a pair (no single shoes please!) Please tie shoes together if they have laces.
