Spooky Double Sale Week!!

Public Health Special Issue

View as Webpage

Greetings,

DID YOU KNOW that hormone replacement therapy, most commonly available as transdermal gels and creams to correct male and female hormone deficiencies, are causing unintended consequences?

Hormone residues can remain on the skin after application and be transferred through direct or indirect contact, posing a risk to close contacts. Cases of elevated hormone levels in those not taking hormone therapy are on the rise.

Washing the application site can reduce the residual gel content from 60% to 15%. Most apply the hormones in the morning or before bed. Keep the product in a drawer away from your partner so the residue does not touch other toiletries. You can also apply the gels/creams with the heel of your hand instead of fingers to reduce transmission. Also, wait to apply until after close contact activities are completed.

Infection Support

For Prevention or During Infection

Year-round infection is the new normal. We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 2.0 Protocol here.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. A recent analysis of methyl B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. A man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Public Health Update

Steve: Here are compelling public health topics from the last four months.

NIH Launches Landmark Project on Whole-Person Health and Function

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched an effort to advance research on whole-person health and create an integrated knowledge network of healthy physiological function. Whole person health involves looking at the whole person - not just separate organs or body systems - and considering multiple factors that promote health. "Biomedical research is largely organized around the study of specific organs and diseases. In contrast, we do much less research on health itself, which is an integrated process involving the whole person,” said Helene M. Langevin, M.D., who leads the NIH-wide program. The five-year research initiative will proceed in several stages, drawing from existing scientific knowledge to develop a complete, working model of healthy human physiology. It will build on the NIH Human Reference Atlas and the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program to connect the complex anatomy and function of the body’s different organs and systems into a single “map.”

Smartphones

Getting a smartphone before age 13 may drastically increase the risk of poor mental health later in life, according to a study from Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. Early use is linked to suicidal thoughts, aggression, and detachment, largely driven by social media, cyberbullying, and lost sleep. Researchers urge urgent action to restrict access and protect young minds. They recommend four key areas for policymakers to address:

  • A requirement of mandatory education on digital literacy and mental health.
  • To strengthen the active identification of social media age violations and ensure meaningful consequences for technology companies.
  • Restricting access to social media platforms.
  • Implementing graduated access restrictions for smartphones.

Dementia on the Decline

According to a study from JAMA Network Open, individuals born between 1944 and 1948 had a significantly lower risk for dementia than those born between 1919 and 1923. Women had a more pronounced decrease in dementia risk compared to men in the 1944-1948 birth cohort. Among individuals aged 81-85 years, dementia prevalence varied notably across birth cohorts, with rates in the US declining from 25% (1890-1913 cohort) to 16% (1939-1943 cohort) and in Europe from 30% (1934-1938 cohort) to 15% (1939-1943 cohort).

Artificial Sweeteners

Kids who consume artificial like aspartame, sucralose, and erythritol may face an increased risk of early puberty, especially if they carry specific genetic markers, according to a study presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting.

It's Never Too Late

Nearly 1 in 4 older adults battling health issues regained optimal well-being within 3 years, showing that decline in later life is not inevitable. According to the PLOS One study, mental health was the strongest predictor: older adults with good psychological wellness were about 5 times more likely to recover. Maintaining two wellness areas (physical, social, emotional, or self-rated) gave 13 times better odds; three areas boosted chances nearly 39 times. Lifestyle and background factors mattered: non-smokers, those above the poverty line, married or widowed individuals, people under 70, and those without diabetes had higher recovery odds.

Indulgence Tax

The World Health Organization is pushing countries to raise the prices of sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco by 50% over the next 10 years through taxation, its strongest backing yet for taxes to help tackle chronic public health problems.

The agency said the move would help cut consumption of the products, which contribute to diseases like diabetes and some cancers, as well as raising money at a time when development aid is shrinking and public debt rising.

Case Report

Bone Health Sans Milk

"Loved your calcium update. FYI: can’t recall how many years since I first came to Bonnie, who said don’t drink milk because of the antibiotics and growth hormones in cow’s milk. Since then I have rarely had a glass of milk and for years have taken calcium supplements instead. Seems to work fine. A recent bone density test showed that I tested quite above the average for my age at 90! Marilyn"

Chiro Corner NEW!

Chiropractic During Pregnancy

A new study was published in the Journal of Pediatric Maternal & Family Health Chiropractic of a 32-year-old mother expecting her third child. She was experiencing intense low back and pelvic pain during her third trimester.

The discomfort made it difficult for her to sleep, care for her young children, or even stand for long periods. At 35 weeks pregnant, doctors discovered that her baby was in a frank breech position. The baby’s bottom was down and the legs were extended upward toward the head, instead of head-down for birth.

Wanting to avoid a c-section and seeking relief from her pain, she turned to chiropractic care. Her chiropractor used the Webster Technique, which focuses on balancing the pelvis and reducing tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. The goal wasn’t to turn the baby directly, but to restore balance in the mother’s body so that the baby could move more freely into the best position for birth.

Over the course of several visits, her back and hip pain improved significantly. Then, at just over 37 weeks, something wonderful happened—her baby, once breech, was born naturally in the head-down position. No surgery. No external procedures. Instead chiropractic adjustments as a safe, non-invasive option for pregnant women.
