This Veterans Day,
Let's Also Honor Yesterday's Horse Heroes
by Helping Today's Working Equines
With a very special Veterans Day quickly approaching, take a look at our "then and now" photos, side-by-side, and you'll see that for many working equines, not much has changed since WW1, except in those communities where Brooke's equine welfare programs are in full swing.

That's why Brooke USA is seeking to raise one million dollars this year - one dollar to honor the memory of each American horse and mule who served in WW1 - to support Brooke's equine welfare programs in the poorest countries on earth.

Today 100 million horses, donkeys, and mules in developing countries endure tremendous hardships, chronic suffering and high mortality - just as the Horse Heroes of WW1 suffered - as they work to serve 600 million people. In other words, very little has changed for working equines with the exception of those who have been reached by Brooke.
About 80% are suffering from preventable injuries, lameness and diseases. We can make a big dent in those statistics by funding equine welfare programs across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Please join us, because we believe that the best way to honor yesterday's Horse Heroes is by helping today's working equines.
We only need $98,754 more to meet our $1 million goal.
Please consider a generous year-end donation!

Brooke USA's "Horse Heroes" campaign is proud to be an official Centennial Partner of the
U.S. World War One Centennial Commission.
From now through the end of the year, donors of $250 or more to our Horse Heroes campaign will receive a wonderful book, "Warrior: The Amazing Story of a Real War Horse," by General Jack Seely. It's the true story of a Thoroughbred who served - and survived - five years in WW1. Illustrations by Sir Alfred Munnings add to the book's magic.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS IN JORDAN

One of the beauties of Brooke's equine welfare programs is sustainability. Long after Brooke leaves a community or a country, the improvements continue because owners and service providers have been trained by Brooke to do so.

The kingdom of Jordan is just one example. An independent review showed the positive, sustainable changes Brooke brought about in Jordan. So after 27 years there, Brooke was able to pull out and direct resources to countries of greater need.

Suleiman Mashaleh, Brooke Country Manager in Jordan, observed, "I believe working animals in Jordan will be thankful to B rooke forever."

Gifts to Brooke USA support programs such as this one!
More progress for Equines in Ethiopia, Thanks to Brooke USA Donors
In the upcoming four years, Brooke aims to reach 575,681 working equines in Ethiopia. In the ten years since Brooke Ethiopia began, thanks to donors it has established a robust program focusing in areas where the highest percentage of equines live and work.

In the coming years, the team will shift its focus away from rural areas to urban areas where equine welfare needs are more severe.
Brooke USA donors give another $20,000 for Equine Victims of Hurricanes & Fires
Thanks to our wonderful donors, our new mascot, Brookes, delivered another check to US Equestrian, this time for $20,000 for their USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund to help the equine victims of recent natural disasters ($5,000 for Florida, $10,000 for Puerto Rico and $5,000 for California). That brings the total to $45,000 that you, through Brooke USA, gave to the disaster fund! Thank you!
Meet Muhammed and Raju
Muhammed Sajid and his horse Raju live in a brick kiln on the outskirts of Lahore. Muhammad is very aware that Raju has helped him significantly increase his income and consequently takes very good care of him: “If I feed him, then he can feed us.”
Brooke Pakistan's team at the kiln has been teaching owners against beating.

Unlike many owners at the kiln, Muhammed only uses his voice and never beats Raju. “Raju understands me and I understand him, so there is no need to beat him."

Muhammed's skills and position within the brick kiln are influencing others on the harm of whipping and beating. "First I set the example [for the other owners] , then I tell them that if I can manage with my voice, so can they.”

Positive stories like this happen as a result of our donors' investments in Brooke USA!
Olympic Medalist Debbie McDonald's Fundraiser for Brooke USA
Our Brooke USA Ambassador and Olympian, Debbie McDonald, together with the Pacific Northwest High Performance Dressage Foundation, held a clinic to support our "Free The Donkeys" campaign.

This wonderful group of folks raised more than $10,000 for our project to build permanent shade shelters and watering points for equines in Ethiopia.

We're so grateful to Debbie, 4-J Farms, Jen Verharen, Karen Bailey, the volunteers, and donors who made this event such a big success for the animals and their owners in Ethiopia!

Thanks to fundraising events and individual donors like these, our "Free The Donkeys - Give Them Shade!" campaign exceeded our goal of $98,000 to bring immediate and long-term welfare improvements to many animals in two busy market areas.
Meet our New Corporate Partner, Shánah
Shánah creates natural therapeutic treats and supplements for horses to help with their health, performance and happiness. The word Shánah means "health" in Navajo, an Amerindian language. Their mission: to spread health in the most natural way possible throughout the equine industry.
If you attend the U.S. Dressage Finals Nov 9-12, we'd like to meet you! Just stop by our booth #39. Thank you to the USDF for helping us!
Thank you, Amagansett Equestrian!

We were delighted to learn that the pony campers at Amagansett Equestrian LLC , in Amagansett, New York, wanted to raise money for Brooke USA. They had a training program for competitive hunter jumper riders ranging in ages from 4 to 65 years old, and as part of their summer pony camp, students were encouraged to explore all facets of the equine industry.

Their trainer, Christina Clark, put a lot of emphasis on equine welfare. As a highlight, they created a charity event where their students sold crafts that they had worked hard on for the event.

Their inaugural event raised $1,124.53 for Brooke USA!

Thank you to Christina Liceaga (owner), Christina Clark (trainer), Faith Rangel (manager), to the donors, and all of the students who worked so hard to help horses, donkeys, and mules in the developing world!!
When you purchase (it's actually a donation) Brooke USA Shop virtual gifts on behalf of family, friends, clients, co-workers, and others, we can send an acknowledgement card to let them know about your generosity and the programs that you're helping to fund in their name.
Honoring the Horse Who Started it All
In case you missed our story earlier this year about "Old Bill," he was the first WW1 horse hero rescued by Brooke founder, Dorothy Brooke.

In his honor, more than 80 years later, he became the subject of the Horse Heroes medal that we've used as the logo for our Horse Heroes campaign this year. His likeness on our medal is the result of an illustration that world-renowned sculptor Alexa King created from this old photo of him.

Not only do we honor Old Bill for his service during WW1, but also for having had the strength to survive the years after the war. As his final contribution to the world, Old Bill inspired Dorothy Brooke to begin what is now the world's largest international equine welfare charity, Brooke.

Today, Brooke USA is operating in the U.S., also as a result of Old Bill.

Brooke USA's Horse Heroes campaign is an official Centennial Partner of the
U.S. World War One Centennial Commission .
Old Bill's likeness has also been reproduced on a custom-designed charm that members of "The Dots" receive upon completion of their pledge. Learn more about this exciting new donor group and how they're helping working equines through Brooke USA: www.BrookeUSA.org/the-dots
40% of the royalties from the book will be donated by the author to continue Dorothy Brooke's amazing legacy of compassion.
IT'S HERE
Dorothy Brooke's new biography will be thoroughly appreciated by whomever it's read
"Dorothy Brooke and the Fight to Save Cairo's Lost War Horses," by Grant Hayter-Menzies, is a new biography of our founder. With a forward by Monty Roberts and reviews by celebrities such as actress Joanna Lumley and Temple Grandin, PhD . it will be a great read for anyone who loves animals, history, or inspirational women. It will also make a great stocking stuffer!
Meet Grayson and his donkeys

Grayson is 25-years-old and lives in Kenya. He has a wife and child whom he supports by transporting goods for the rice trade with his donkeys.

Grayson said: “My Donkeys are very, very helpful. Donkeys are vital to rice production. I would either earn very little or nothing without my donkeys. With my donkeys I can get something to eat every day. I get supper at night and breakfast in the morning because of my donkeys. Everything I give to my family, I get from my donkeys.”

Grayson’s donkeys are so important to him and his family that he makes sure they are happy and healthy, have a cool shaded area to rest and fresh food and water.

Good stories like Grayson's happen because people like you have supported Brooke USA!

Another Update on Brooke's Hydroponics Project in India
You may remember reading that Brooke had begun a project in India to see if a form of hydroponics would improve the diets of working equines, because many poor families do not own land on which their animals can graze.
Brooke has provided the basic equipment and knowledge that they need to easily and inexpensively raise green fodder in their homes, to supplement the diets of their animals. With seed, trays, and very little water, green fodder can grow thick and dense, like this at day 9 of production.
The most recent report from the field is that this continues to be a practical, sustainable way for poor families to improve the diets of their working animals. This is the fodder at day 10 of production, It is mature, nutrient-dense, and ready to feed.
Donkeys are enjoying a healthy, green meal! A majority of these families are seeing a change in the health and body condition of their donkeys since they joined the hydroponics project!

Your donations have funded effective solutions to equine welfare challenges around the world!
