FOCUS ON FOAL HEALTH
June 2017
Neonatal Unit for Critical Foals
One of the most thrilling and heartwarming experiences in the equine world is seeing a healthy foal stand within minutes of birth. However, sick foals can have some of the highest mortality rates in veterinary medicine. Therefore, the effort to save them takes a talented and dedicated team of professionals in the Equine Medical Emergency, Critical Care and Neonatology Service who work around the clock in order to beat the odds.

Sick foals brought to UC Davis are seen in the Lucy G. Whittier Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the veterinary hospital. The highly-trained team, led by Dr. Gary Magdesian, chief of service and the holder of the Roberta A. and Carla Henry Endowed Chair in emergency medicine and critical care, can handle the most complicated cases, providing 24/7 coverage.

UC   Davis  Announces First In Vitro Equine Pregnancy
UC Davis moved one step closer to providing total equine reproductive health care with the recent news that a 6-year-old Oldenburg mare is pregnant. The surrogate is carrying a foal produced with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a unique in-vitro fertilization process.

“This is the first all-UC Davis ICSI pregnancy and the result of a great team effort among veterinary scientists and clinicians,” said Dr. Stuart Meyers, a veterinary theriogenologist leading the research effort. “We obtained the eggs, matured them in vitro, performed ICSI fertilization, grew the embryos to blastocyst, and then transferred to a recipient mare.”
Honoring Patricia Yeretzian — a legacy of loving horses
The Center for Equine Health (CEH) recently dedicated a foaling stall to the late Patricia (Pat) Yeretzian, who had a deep passion for horses and a commitment to equine health. The state-of-the-art stall is a fitting tribute to her, since foals always held a special place in her heart.

During the dedication, family and friends joined the center in celebrating Yeretzian and her love for horses. Her passion began as a young girl, riding her horse to school from her family’s ranch in the Elk Grove area.
T.S. and K.D. Glide Foundation Honored with 2017 El Blanco Award
The School of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce the Thornton S. and Katrina D. Glide Foundation of California as the recipient of the 2017 El Blanco Award. This award recognizes significant contributions that animal owners and other benefactors have made to clinical veterinary medicine by presenting afflicted animals for clinical studies, offering hypotheses and evaluations of therapy, and supporting clinicians at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital who pursue novel diagnostic or therapeutic methods.

“We are grateful for the partnership with the T.S. and K.D. Glide Foundation,” Dean Michael Lairmore said. “The trustees are clearly devoted to animals, advancing veterinary medicine and providing learning opportunities for hundreds of our veterinary students and residents.”
Center for Equine Health Hosts CEM Training for USDA and CDFA
Representatives from the US Department of Agriculture and California Department of Food and Agriculture participated in a two-day seminar hosted by the Center for Equine Health (CEH) about preventing the spread of contagious equine metritis (CEM). A highly communicable venereal disease of horses, CEM can cause temporary infertility for one or more breeding cycles in affected mares, resulting in significant economic loss to the nation’s horse industry. The outreach and training efforts of the CEH staff and faculty are key to preventing CEM from taking hold in California and the nation.
