Hands-On Horticulture & Tree Care Careers

Students Tackle Tree Care

Our Tree Fellers Arbor Care team was thrilled to connect with Horticulture Program students at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School last month. Over twenty students and multiple faculty members joined forces with the Tree Fellers crew to A) identify issues with young campus trees struggling to thrive, and B) provide corrective services to assist those trees in re-establishing healthy roots and growing with structural integrity.

We split into groups where students learned and practiced three important plant healthcare related services:

Performing 'root collar excavation' using an AirSpade, tending girdled roots, removing excess mulch and grass from the root flare, and adding mycorrhizal soil amendments to the root zone.

Injecting 'deep root fertilizer' to each tree's root zone.

Executing proper pruning cuts to snip, clip, and lop away dead wood, codominant stems, and reduce end weight on lengthy branches.

Overall, our team was very impressed with the attentiveness and care these students showed during their hands-on training, and were excited to see each student jump in to tackle the various tasks offered to them.

We believe the future health of our trees, and our industry, depends on the knowledge carried forward by the upcoming generation of professionals; we hope that sharing our passion for arbor care is just the first step in exciting others about the opportunities ahead.

Seasonal Prevention - Pine, Spruce

Bark Spray for Black Turpentine Beetles

It's not too late to consider a Black Turpentine Beetle (BTB) preventative basal bark spray application for your favorite Pitch Pine, White Pine, and Norway Spruce trees this season. If you have pine trees, you are vulnerable to Black Turpentine Beetles.

Springtime Fertilizer

The focus of deep root fertilization is to provide essential nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, iron, and manganese) and beneficial rhizosphere bacteria to nourish and enhance the soil around a tree's root system.

Root Collar Restoration

Mulch is good...but too much mulch can cause problems around the base of trees. What to do if my tree is over-mulched? Visually, over-mulching can look like a "mulch volcano", burying a tree's root flare.
