Hospice Happenings - July 2018
Getting Grace - Starting an Important Conversation
Getting Grace is an independent, award winning film about teenager Grace (Madelyn Dundon), who is dying of cancer. Grace visits a funeral home to find out what will happen to her after she dies, but ends up teaching the awkward funeral director, Bill Jankowski (Daniel Roebuck), how to truly live - something he had long forgotten how to do. See movie trailer below .
In bringing Getting Grace to Edmonton for its Canadian debut, Park Memorial Funeral Home hopes that this beautiful film's message about living life to its fullest - while also talking openly and honestly about death, dying and grief - will be the start of an ongoing conversation that happens, not just quietly behind funeral home doors, but openly between family members and friends.

At the end of each show time, Daniel Roebuck and Madelyn Dundon will hold an open panel discussion of the film and its subject matter, along with some of Edmonton’s hope and healing organizations - including Pilgrims Hospice.

Although this is a ticketed event, Park Memorial is not benefitting financially. Instead, proceeds will be shared between Momentum Walk-In Counselling Society, Canadian Mental Health Association – Edmonton Region, and Pilgrims Hospice.

The film runs at the Garneau Theatre, August 11 – 13, 2018 . Other events include a FilmMaker’s Dinner Fundraiser (August 9). Further information and tickets available here .
Bereaved Parents Awareness Month
July is Bereaved Parents Awareness Month - a time for supporting friends and loved ones who have experienced the loss of a child, and to "be there" for the bereaved.

Often we don’t know what to say or do for grieving parents and their families. But perhaps we can reach out and listen without advising; be a shoulder to cry on; or give a hug when appropriate and needed.

“Burying your child is a parent’s worst nightmare - the things that go through your mind are unbelievable.... I give a lot of credit to Pilgrims Hospice for helping me talk about devastating circumstances, and to go on from there.” – Alfred (pictured with his deceased son, Peter)

For Bereaved Parents Awareness Month , help heal a grieving heart by making a gift to Pilgrims Hospice. Your gift will help individuals like Albert receive grief counselling free of charge - removing any financial barriers to accessing professional help in a time of crisis. Thank you.
