Helping Others Enjoy Lifegenna

PHS Volunteer of the Month,

Genna DiPinto

Genna DiPinto is a gifted cook (you should try her chocolate chip banana bread!) and extraordinary young woman. Now 17, she's already given four summers to volunteering at Pilgrims Hospice, coming in one day a week with her baking.

Living in the area and curious about what we do here, Genna decided to find out, and after having a tour, decided she wanted to help.

"I was nervous at first, being so young, but I understood what it can be like to have an illness and pain, with people looking at you differently, because my sister has epilepsy and suffers quite a lot."

Genna's empathy for our clients stemmed from her experience with her sister and has grown over time. She enjoys the joke telling at the lunch table and playing trivia with the clients, often researching the trivia questions herself.

Seeing clients make new friends, perhaps late in life, has given Genna a sense of hope that we've not done living until the end, and she contributes with ease to the hospice focus of living in the moment and enjoying life to the full.

"If you were nearing the end of life, wouldn't you like a good piece of cake?"

Volunteering reminds her that it's the simple things you do in people's lives that helps them. It helps them to feel important, and she feels important, too.

By volunteering at Pilgrims, Genna's confidence in herself has grown, and this year she is the Student President at her school, with aspirations of becoming a medical doctor. Genna, you are our Volunteer of the Month, and we know you'll go far!

If you had only one message you'd like to get across for World hospice & palliative care day, what would it be? For Deb Birkett, PHS Executive Director, it's that:

"Hospice is not about Death, it's about Life... having the chance to live each day to its fullest, surrounded by a caring, compassionate Community."
