Car Accident Patients
HCPF has received multiple emails from patients stating they have been told they cannot apply for Hospital Discounted Care because their services were provided due to a car accident. HCPF wants to clarify that hospitals must screen all uninsured patients who receive services at their facilities and complete applications for any patient who wishes to apply for financial assistance for a past or upcoming date of service. Motor vehicle insurance is not considered creditable coverage, and these patients would be considered uninsured if they are not covered by other health insurance. Discounts on care provided to patients applies only to what the patients themselves would owe and does not change what the facility should receive from a third party who is fully or partially responsible for the patient's health care.
As a general reminder, if a payment from a third party payer exceeds the Hospital Discounted Care rate for the services provided to the patient, the patient would owe nothing.
