HLSP News - Spring 2025

Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Spring Happenings

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Spring 2025 edition of HLSP News. I'm looking forward to the arrival of Spring and watching the flowers bloom and trees grow new leaves.

In this edition of HLSP News, our Anatomy of a Library feature returns with Lourdes' Medical Librarian Danny Scopelliti sharing the library space and services at the Lourdes Hospital Library.

I also share an update on the HLSP field visits that I've done this year. Information about two new Lunch and Learn programs scheduled this Spring is included with the first taking place on April 24 (Nellie Brown from Cornell University's ILR School sharing information on occupational stress) and the second on June 4 (Jenn White from NYS DEC addressing mosquito's and mosquito borne illnesses).

In the electronic Resources section, there is information about the efforts taken this year to increase usage of the subscriptions that we provide to all members and information about NEJM Evidence which we added to our NEJM subscription this year.

Please enjoy this Spring edition of HLSP News and let me know if you have any questions about anything included here or related to HLSP.

All the Best,

Christine Brown

Outreach Services Librarian/HLSP Coordinator

Anatomy of a Library

Anatomy of a Library returns with a trip around the Lourdes Hospital library as Danny Scopelliti, the new Medical Librarian for Guthrie Clinic's Lourdes Hospital shares the space and services through images of the space.

The Guthrie Lourdes Library is a fantastic resource located within the Guthrie Clinic’s Lourdes Hospital building and serves as a heavily used location for collaboration, study, research, and learning. The library enjoys a great deal of foot traffic and in-house patronage. Recently, the library began adding selected art prints and framed images to enhance the space’s sense of medical purpose. These qualities, combined with the digital portal of Guthrie Libraries, make Lourdes Library a special and formidable resource for the Guthrie Clinic.

Upon entering the library, a long space is encountered with shelving along the first, left-side wall. This shelving contains selected and general medical textbooks, particularly geared towards Lourdes’ residencies.

To the left of this space, an alcove serves as the first workstation. This alcove contains two computers, a connected desk, and general shelving. The computers and desk are used for accessing the many electronic resources provided to Lourdes Hospital providers and administrators.

To the left of the alcove, the librarian’s office can be found. Danny works at this location three days a week, splitting the rest of his time in Sayre, PA at the Robert Packer Hospital branch of the Guthrie Clinic.

Beyond the alcove and office, a print room is present. Another long work desk to the right of this contains an additional two computers. Attached to the library on the right side are two medium-sized training and presentation rooms run by the hospital’s Learning Services department. These serve to enhance the collaborative and learning-based focus of the library space.

On the other side of the library, shelving sets are present, and some contain the libraries special collections. These include a DEI collection, a Mental Health Collection, Practice of Medicine collection, and – most recently – a Wellbeing Collection of books purchased with assistance from Guthrie’s own Thrive Wellbeing department.

Lourdes Library is particularly special because of its open-door policies. The library is open 24/7 with badge access after-hours. This allows residents, students, staff, doctors, and nurses perpetual access to the space and materials. Further, the librarian’s office is always open, and many great relationships and connections have subsequently been struck up here!

The library is a fantastic addition to the Lourdes and Guthrie healthcare community, and caregivers are grateful for its historic importance at Lourdes Hospital.

Electronic Resources

We currently offer two journals and electronic reference resources to our HLSP members and we're working to increase usage of these resources. When we renewed our New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) subscription, we added NEJM Evidence. I've shared links to both journals and marketing material for these two journal subscriptions and if you haven't received them or aren't able to locate them, please reach out to me and I'll share them with you.

I've also shared the list of reference titles that we provide through STAT!Ref and if you aren't able to locate it, please let me know and I'll share them too.

Please share the links to these resources with your providers and administrators so they can access them. And if anyone has any questions about these materials, please let me know and I'll work with you to answer those.

We also provide a subscription to five Ovid journals to all HLSP members on a cost share basis. If you have any questions or are interested in this program, please reach out to me.

Field Visits

I have visited the librarians and liaisons for all member hospitals as of the distribution of this newsletter. I thank you for your time and I learned a great deal about your organizations.

We've done work to make sure that all hospital members have access to the electronic resources we provide. We now know that Ovid (for NEJM) and STAT!Ref have the correct IP addresses for each member. And I've shared marketing material for NEJM and NEJM Evidence that you can share with your providers and administrators. Please share the links and the marketing material that I provided with your providers and administrators through your internal communication sources so they can access these resources which are provided at no charge to your hospital.

You've also shared valuable information about your institutions that I can use for future programs and services. I'm planning a lunch and learn on pharmacy for the Summer and a series of lunch and learns on AI in hospitals for the 2025-2026 year (which starts July 1).

HLSP Grant Program

We are well into the 2024/2025 HLSP Grant Cycle and I'm waiting to receive three grant applications. If you haven't already done so, please complete the form and return to me as soon as possible so I can request the check to be sent to you.

As a reminder, the purpose of the HLSP grant program is to provide funds that allow each member hospital library to purchase resources that will improve patient care. The funds are not intended to supplement the resources of an individual.

If you have any questions about whether a specific item or service is allowable, you can check the guidelines or reach out to me for information and a discussion.
