Fall Messages

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Fall 2024 edition of HLSP News.

I hope your Summer went well, and that Fall is full of great things for you.

In this edition of HLSP News, we bring you information about celebrating National Medical Librarian Month (held in October every year) as well as updates on our HLSP Grant program and the electronic resources provided by SCRLC. We also share the latest program information on the Health, Wellness and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series and we end with some links to upcoming continuing education opportunities.

Please enjoy this edition of HLSP News and let me know if you have any questions about anything included.

All the Best,

Christine Brown

Outreach Services Librarian/HLSP Coordinator

National Medical Librarian Month

October is National Medical Librarian Month, and the Medical Library Association (MLA) offers great information about celebrating this recognition and using it to raise awareness of the work that medical librarians perform that improves the care to your hospital's patients.

In addition to the information provided by the MLA, at the last HLSP Advisory Committee meeting, we discussed ways to celebrate this recognition including setting up a table near the cafeteria or other place where providers frequent and sharing a brief article about it in the hospital newsletter or other internal resource.

Electronic Resources

Currently, SCRLC provides a subscription to NEJM and to 17 titles in STAT!Ref to all HLSP members. We also offer five titles through Ovid Journals on a cost share basis and four HLSP members currently participate in that subscription.

The challenge we face is that several members do not participate in the NEJM and STAT!Ref resources even though those are offered free of charge to all HLSP members. I plan to do field visits with all HLSP Members this year to determine why those resources aren't being used. We want to increase the usage as much as possible.

Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries

Lunch and Learn Series

The Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series is now in its second year and the goal of this series is to provide information that can be useful for librarians, library liaisons, and providers.

In addition to providing useful information, this series is also an opportunity to meet other SCRLC members including those who work at the other member hospitals. We encourage you to attend the lunch and learn programs and to invite your providers and administrators to participate as well.

Our next program will be held on October 2, and it addresses what vaccines are needed to prepare for the winter illness season. We're also planning for programs on cyber security/scams/hackers and related issues, mosquito borne illnesses, and mental health. Please check our website periodically for further announcements. And if there are any topics you'd like to learn more about, please reach out to me to share them.

HLSP Grant Program

The applications for the 2024/2025 HLSP Grants have been sent to the librarians and liaisons for all member hospitals and some have been completed and returned. We encourage all members to return the application so that we can verity the planned purchases are allowable.

As a reminder, the purpose of the HLSP grant program is to provide funds that allow each member hospital library to purchase resources that will improve patient care. The funds are not intended to supplement the resources of an individual.

If you have any questions about whether a specific item or service is allowable, you can check the guidelines or reach out to Christine for information and a discussion.
