Summer Happenings

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Summer 2024 edition of HLSP News. I hope you had a great Spring, and that Summer will be just as wonderful for you. Please enjoy this edition of HLSP News where I will share some of the great things now happening with HLSP at SCRLC.

Anatomy of a Library

What do medical libraries look like

This new feature began in the Spring 2024 edition of HLSP News, and the purpose of this article is to provide a look at the hospital and medical libraries in our region and beyond.

In this edition of HLSP News, we will see and learn about the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the services it provides to the medical community and hospital libraries. If you have any questions about the NLM, please reach out to me or check out their website.

Here is an image of the building that houses the National Library of Medicine (NLM) which located on the campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Founded in 1836, it's the world's largest biomedical library and provides print and electronic resources to millions of people throughout the world. The NLM also supports and conducts research, development and training on bioinformatics and coordinates the Network of the NLM (NNLM). Below are some of the services the NNLM provides to the public. The offerings of the NLM are extensive and we cannot cover all of them in this newsletter so we've selected the ones that could be more relevant to your work. To see all that the NLM offers, you can check out their website.

PubMed

One of the biggest offerings that NLM provides is PubMed. In case you haven't used PubMed yet, it's described on their website as "a free resource supporting the search and retrieval of biomedical and life sciences literature with the aim of improving health–both globally and personally."

MedlinePlus

Another popular service offered by NLM is their MedlinePlus website which provides trusted health information designed for the general public. The information in MedlinePlus is high-quality, easy to understand, and free of advertising.

MedlinePlus also publishes a magazine. The scientific and medical information for the magazine is reviewed for accuracy the National Institutes of Health.

NLM Virtual Tour

Of course, this is the HLSP News Anatomy of a Library feature, so we know you want to see pictures of the buildings that house the NLM. Their website includes numerous pictures and it's difficult to choose just a few.

A cool feature they offer is a virtual tour which is available at this link where you can see the space and read about the facility.

History of Medicine

The NLM has an entire section dedicated to the history of medicine and you can access it here. Recently, there was a great post that provided information related to Juneteenth.

This section of NNLM also includes archives; videos; rare books and manuscripts; a digital collection; exhibitions; and history talks. Please check out the history of medicine to learn more.

The NLM has a wide audience including researchers, publishers, educators, medical professionals, and the public. They also provide information specifically for librarians and that includes a webpage specifically for librarians. On this page there are links for online catalogs, copyright information; digital collections; a library functional area; policies and guidelines; and products and services.

The NLM also provided the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) and they provide a lot of information about medical libraries for all medical libraries and other libraries that provide health information to their users. NNLM divides the country into 7 regions and New York is located in Region 7.

So, that's a brief overview of the National Library of Medicine and it's many services. It's a great resource for medical librarians and I encourage you to check out the website and learn more about their offerings.

I hope to have another local library in the Fall 2024 edition of HLSP News. If you would like to share your library with everyone, please let me know. And keep in mind that all libraries are different. We are interested in seeing other libraries to get ideas for our own library and learn new ways to approach things.

Electronic Resources

SCRLC provides several electronic resources to all of our HLSP members.

If providers and administrators at your hospital aren't taking advantage of these resources, please reach out to me so we can work together to figure out how to best engage them with these products.

And if you are using them and would like to know your usage numbers, please let me know and I'll obtain that information for you.

STAT!Ref

New England Journal of Medicine

Ovid Journals

In June, we renewed the STAT!Ref subscription for reference resources for our HLSP members after we saw that the usage numbers for the 2023-2024 year showed a steady increase throughout the year. We reviewed the usage numbers and made some changes to the titles based on usage. The list of reference resources that are included in the SCRLC subscription is available here.

SCRLC has provided a subscription to NEJM for many years and all the providers (including doctors, nurses, PAs, technicians, etc.) and administrators at all member hospitals are able to access the NEJM via this subscription. NEJM is recognized throughout the world as a premier resource for locating accurate medical information.

SCRLC offers all members hospitals the ability to join our subscription to 5 Ovid journals on a cost share basis. If your hospital is not already participating in this cost share program for electronic resources through Ovid, please reach out to me for more information including the names of the 5 journals and how to participate.

In addition to the electronic resources that SCRLC purchases for HLSP members, MedlinePlus is a great resource for medical information and it's free to everyone. MedlinePlus provides information for medical providers as well as the public. There are some excellent resources for librarians to share information about MedlinePlus with their constituents including brochures and I encourage you to look into this resource and share it with your providers, administrators and anyone who might be interested.

Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries

Lunch and Learn Series

This Lunch and Learn series is wrapping up a successful first year and we're moving into our second year with new topics. The goal of this series is to provide information that can be useful for your job and introduce you to the other HLSP members as well as SCRLC members in other types of libraries and also museums. We encourage you to invite your providers and administrators to participate in this series.

For the Summer, we have a program scheduled to take place on July 10 at 11:00 and the title is "Vaccine Hesitance and How to Address It" to be presented by Rachel Buckwalter, nurse at the Tompkins County Health Department. You can register for this webinar on our website. I look forward to seeing you there.

We continue to work on additional programs for the Health, Wellness, and Hospital Libraries Lunch and Learn series including the ways in which mental health and addiction are impacting libraries; how AI is and can be used in our hospitals; and how cyberattacks/ransomware/scams/hacks and the threat thereof cause hospitals problems for our hospitals.

On the topic of cyberattacks, Microsoft has developed a cybersecurity program for rural hospitals and some details about the program were outlined in an article published earlier this month. It's a growing concern in the health care field and we will provide resources for hospital librarians and others working in hospitals as we learn more, and responses are developed.

Dates and times for other programs will be announced as soon as they are arranged. Please check our website periodically for further announcements. And if you have any ideas about topics you'd like to learn more about in a webinar format, please reach out to me to share those ideas.

HLSP Grant Program

We are winding down the 2023-2024 Grant cycle and the final report forms were sent to all HLSP members in early June. If you haven't already done so, please complete the final report and return it to me by the end of June so we have the information for our Annual HLSP report. And if you, have any questions about the final report, please reach out to me.

As a reminder, the purpose of the HLSP grant program is to provide funds that allow each member hospital library to purchase items and services that will improve patient care. The funds are not intended to supplement the resources of an individual. If you have any questions about whether a specific item or service is allowable, please reach out to me so we can discuss your questions.

I will be sending the applications for the 2024-2025 HLSP Grant cycle to all member hospital library contacts in the next few weeks.
