HLSP News - Summer 2026

Brought to you by the Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP). This is a Newsletter for the Health Science Librarians, HLSP Liaisons, and Health Care Providers in South Central New York State.

Summer Highlights

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Summer 2026 edition of HLSP News. The first few days of Summer have provided us with mostly sunny days with mild temps. However, it looks like that's about the change, and we'll soon see more Summer like temps. I hope everyone is able to stay cool.

So, I'll share that one of my favorite glimmers now is watching the plants in my container gardens grow. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll have some nice tomatoes and cucumbers in another month or so and it looks like I'll be able to enjoy a pepper soon. 😊

I'm sharing an image of the New York State Library above. It's a reminder that the NYS Library includes a Health and Medical Collection that's available for libraries and individuals to access. I encourage you to look into this free resource as it might have some valuable information you can use and share with your providers and administrators.

In this edition of HLSP News, there is information about several things including renewing NEJM, NEJM Evidence, and our Ovid Journal subscriptions; the HLSP Grant Program for this year and the upcoming; and the results of this year's field visits.

Please reach out with any questions and glimmers you might have about this edition or any services SCRLC provides to you as well as for health information to our entire membership. And find ways to enjoy the Summer.

All the Best,

Christine Brown

Outreach Services Librarian/HLSP Coordinator

Field Visits

The field visits for 2025/2026 are complete and most were conducted in person this year. I thank all of you for working with me to fit a visit into your schedule.

As mentioned in the Spring edition of HLSP News, our member hospitals are working on nurse retention as a significant way to cut down on the costs of traveling nurses which is so much higher than employees. The efforts to retain nurses include working on the Magnet designation, following the Pathways to Excellence program, and community building activities.

I will work with all of you to assist you in the efforts to build and maintain a strong nursing staff. If there is anything related to this that you'd like to see, please let me know.

I also found that several HLSP members are working through renovations. It's great that your hospitals are able to expand or reuse existing space to meet the needs of your communities. Keep in mind that the information needs of our hospitals are also expanding and changing. I'm happy to work with you so that your providers and administrators have the information they need to do their jobs well.

Through the field visits I learned about some lunch and learn topics that may be of interest including a presentation (maybe even a demonstration) of OpenEvidence; practical information about other AI platforms; an update on the tick-borne program we did a few years ago; and finding ways to help with nurse retention.

I'll continue working with all of the HLSP members to continue to provide resources you can use. And I look forward to next year's field visits.

Electronic Resources

The subscription to the STAT!Ref titles was renewed this Spring and we made no changes to the titles this year. A true comparison between the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 year will be easier to do next year at this time.

We are currently working to renew our New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), NEJM Evidene and Ovid journals that we subscribe too. The current subscriptions for these items goes through the end of the year so we have a lot of time to consider renewing and possibly switching some titles. If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know.

As you know all HLSP members have access to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), NEJM Evidence, and several STAT!Ref reference titles at no charge. Please let me know if you find you're not able to access these items.

We also offer 5 Ovid journals to HLSP members on a cost share basis and we picked up a subscription to the 2025 Doody's Core titles. Please reach out to me if you are interested in joining the Ovid journal subscription or find you don't have access to the Doody's resource.

HLSP Grant Program

If you haven't already done so, please use your grant funds ASAP. It's important to note that this year's grant funds must be entirely spent during the 2025/2026 fiscal year (7/1/25 to 6/30/26). Extensions cannot and will not be granted.

We will begin the 2026/2027 Grant Program sometime this Summer and we anticipate making a small but important change to the program. Please be on the lookout for more information about the 2026/2027 HLSP Grant Program this Summer.

As a reminder, we subscribed to the 2025 edition of Doody's Core Titles and we continue to have access to this resource for the 2026/2027 fiscal year. We held a demonstration webinar of the resource in May which was recorded and is now available on our website. More information about Doody's Core Titles is also available on their website.

If you have any questions about any aspect of the HLSP Grant Program including whether a specific item or service is allowable, you can check the guidelines or reach out to me for information and a discussion. You can also view the Niche Academy tutorial on the grant program.
