NEW LEADERSHIP AT THE HOSTOS CENTER FOR
THE ARTS & CULTURE
JOHN MACELWEE APPOINTED AS DIRECTOR;
CHARLES RICE-GONZ�LEZ AND �NGEL MORALES TO SERVE AS ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS
Dr. F�lix V. Matos Rodr�guez, President of Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos Community College, has announced the appointment of John MacElwee as the new director of the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture (HCAC). In this capacity he replaces Wallace I. Edgecombe, who retired last year after 39 years of outstanding service.
MacElwee comes to Hostos from Port Townsend, Washington, where he was Executive Director of Centrum, one of the state's leading cultural institutions. With a budget of $2.4 million, Centrum offers nationally-recognized jazz and traditional music workshops as well as writing conferences, festival performances, creative residency programs, and training in all genres of the cultural arts for middle and high school students.

Hostos President F�lix V. Matos Rodr�guez was the keynote speaker at the New York City Police Department's Hispanic Heritage Celebration held on October 8 in the One Police Plaza Auditorium. The event recognized several outstanding Latino members of New York City's law enforcement family and provided the chance to say thank you for all of their hard work. Read more |

HOSTOS PRESIDENT F�LIX MATOS RODR�GUEZ APPOINTED TO THE BOARDS OF
BOEDC, PHIPPS HOUSES, AND CFR
Hostos Community College President F�lix V. Matos Rodr�guez has been appointed to the boards of the following three organizations: Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC); and the Phipps Houses.
CFR is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, business executives, journalists, educators and students, civic and religious leaders, and other interested citizens in order to help them better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other countries. Founded in 1921, CFR takes no institutional positions on matters of policy. It publishes Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal of international affairs and U.S. foreign policy.

A PROGRAM BUILDS A "BRIDGE" FOR STUDENTS TO PURSUE NURSING AT HOSTOS |

Ten students, who successfully completed the Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development's first Bridge-to-LPN program, were honored at a recognition ceremony on October 4, 2013. These students refused to let any obstacles stand in their way as they worked toward earning a degree in nursing. So it was fitting that Hostos student Isis M. Mejia, a bilingual, single mother of two, who received the highest score on the CUNY Assessment Tests (CATS), was selected to be the student speaker at the recognition ceremony. She is also smart enough to know that sometimes you need to cross a few bridges before you get to your ultimate destination.

During the weekend of October 18, twenty Student Ambassadors from Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos Community College's Student Leadership Academy participated in two major service activities in the Bronx.
On October 19, twenty Hostos Ambassadors helped to beautify the Bronx Park Middle School in the Pelham Parkway neighborhood. Students painted murals on doors, added color to classroom tables, and helped to plant flower bulbs in the gardens that surround the school. Their hard worked helped to restore, refresh and reinvigorate an important Bronx institution, and they were thanked for their service by New York State Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, who represents the Bronx's District 80.

When Esteban Advincola walks through the halls of Eugenio Mar�a de Hostos Community College, some people mistake him for his brother Elias...or his brother Josu�...or his brother Carlos Ram�n Jr.
That's because Esteban is one of four brothers who are currently making Hostos their academic home.
And if you think they might get tired of being together, or doing classwork, you don't really know the Advincolas. Their love for Hostos and the opportunities it provides is exceeded only by their love for their family.

On October 4,the Hostos Chair and two Co-Coordinators of the CUNY Campaign for Voluntary Charitable Giving-Dolly Mart�nez, Nydia R. Edgecombe, and Diana Kiselyuk, respectively-accepted a trophy and two other awards for the 2012 Campaign, which brought in $51,041. Over $38,000 (approximately 75 percent of the total) went to three Hostos charities: The Hostos Foundation, The Alumni Circle of 100, and the Children's Center.
