Educational and Workforce Development Actors, Systems, and Collaborations
Report funded by The Ford Foundation
In 2007, the combined impact of demographic changes and a financial crisis led to the most severe loss of jobs across the country since the Great Depression. This significantly changed the employment prospects for all groups-but particularly for low-income people with low literacy levels. Yet, currently few services are available to prepare them for opportunities in an increasingly competitive labor market.
With the generous support of The Ford Foundation, Hostos Community College presents "Educational and Workforce Development Actors, Systems and Collaborations." The report explores national demographic and economic shifts as well as local workforce development changes. It draws conclusions about the best ways to help low-income individuals who lack extensive formal education. Collaborations between community colleges and community-based organizations and the creation of career pathways are some of the strategies that can help these individuals respond to a changing economy.

HOSTOS "PAY IT FORWARD" PROGRAM AIMS TO ENCOURAGE PHILANTHROPY
Paying it forward means doing something good for someone in response to a good deed done on your behalf.
But when you pay it forward, you do not repay the person who did something nice for you, you instead do something nice for someone else.
This "cycle of support" was highlighted through six Hostos Community College Students who were featured in a recent publication, aptly titled, Pay It Forward.
Hostos President Flix V. Matos Rodrguez, Ph.D. said of students: "Each of these students has his/her own unique story, but they are collectively united by their demonstrated commitment to make the most of every opportunity, realize their full potential and build successful lives. Moreover, there is one additional trait that these students share which makes them truly inspirational: each exemplifies the College's hallmark of "paying it forward" and contributing to a "chain reaction."

Faculty Member of the Month
Name: Rees Shad
Age:48 Title: Coordinator of Media Design Program/Assistant Professor
Professor Rees Shad, now in his fifth year teaching at Hostos, has helped build the Media Design Program by creating over 50 syllabi, while providing his students with practical, hands-on experience. The digital classes allow students with artistic talent and interests in modern media to explore disciplines including graphic design, animation, audio recording, motion graphics, web design, video production and photography. He is also excited about adding Game Design to the list of options. Launched in January, the Game Design program drew 24 students in its first year and six are on their way to an Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences.
But music is Shad's specialty - he is a singer/songwriter that has produced nine solo records, ran a recording studio, and a multi-media company among other things.
Rees recently hosted and organized the "Next Note Music Conference" held at the College on April 27, 2012. The "Next Note Music Conference" brought in a panel of music industry professionals - some who Shad knew from his 20 years in the music industry - to discuss the present and future challenges and opportunities of the music business with students in the Digital Music Program.
"I was in the music business forever," Rees said. "And while I am still involved, I love the mentoring part of my gig." | |

Class of 1978
For the thousands who went and fought in the Vietnam War, their lives were forever changed, many for the worst. But Victor Vzquez is one veteran success story.
"I went from a GED to a Ph.D.," is Dr. Vzquez's favorite line, which he hopes serves as an inspiration to other college students. Vzquez earned his GED while serving the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
When he came back to the states, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, enrolled at Hostos in 1975 and earned his associate's degree in 1978. His pursuit of higher education continued with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Inter American University; a Master's Degree in psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and a Doctorate in History from Temple University.
Dr. Vzquez worked at Temple University for 13 years serving as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Administration, professor of Latin American Studies, and as advisor and mentor to the Latino Student Association. In 2002, the same year he received his Ph.D., he was also selected "Professional of the Year" by the Council of Spanish-Speaking Organizations.
He is currently an Associate Professor at Miami-Dade College. He enjoys cooking, teaching and learning and playing Puerto Rican bomba and plena music.
