Hello and Happy New Year from the Hostos Community College Foundation! Students are returning from a much-deserved break, but we have been busy securing opportunities to help them thrive in 2022 and beyond. We appreciate that you are taking the time to learn about Foundation news and upcoming events. As always, we thank you for all that you do in support of student success at Hostos.
FOUNDATIONS NEWS
The morning of Giving Tuesday (dubbed #CUNYTuesday at all 25 CUNY Colleges), donations to Hostos Community College were over $30,000, a respectable amount, but shy of our $35,000 goal. Thanks to tremendous efforts led by Development Officer Idelsa Méndez, the Division of Institutional Advancement raised nearly $60,000 in one day, securing a cumulative total of $90,000 by the end of the day. The campaign was open through December 31, by which time Hostos had raised over $115,000. This amount shattered Hostos’ previous #CUNYTuesday record of $68,000 set in 2016. The #CUNYTuesday fundraising leaderboard ranked Hostos 1st among the community colleges, and 11th overall.

This outstanding accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedicated support of faculty, staff, and many other devoted friends of the College. The generosity of our Hostos family is a testament to the deep love the community holds for this institution.

This year’s campaign raised funds for Bridge Tuition Support Assistance (BTSA) and the Circle of 100 Emergency Fund. Both funds provide support for students facing unexpected expenses which could impede their academic progress. By supporting these financial relief programs, Hostos students are afforded opportunities to persist and achieve.

The annual Alumni Class Campaign kicked off on January 27, 2022. The Office Alumni Relations asks alumni and friends of the College to make gifts of at least $20.22 to honor the Class of 2022 and support student achievement at Hostos. The campaign seeks to build a culture of philanthropy throughout our alumni network and to celebrate the accomplishments of the newest graduates of Hostos. Donations will be accepted from January 27 until the Spring Commencement Ceremony in June. To learn more or make a gift, visit the 20.22 Class Campaign website.

ALUMNI RELATIONS
The Hostos Community College family and the Office of Alumni Relations extend our warmest congratulations to alumnus Michael Cruz, Class of 2012, on his selection as a 2022 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program Graduate Fellow.

Mr. Cruz was a proud member of our Hostos Student Leadership Academy and, after his graduation from Hostos, he was selected for our first ever Alma Matters Global Citizen Award. With this new opportunity, Mr. Cruz will embark on a career in diplomacy upon completion of his graduate studies.
Looking to Get Involved?
If you are, or know, a Hostos alumna/us looking for ways to give back, the Office of Alumni Relations is seeking participants for the Alumni Speakers Bureau, Alumni Spotlight, and Alumni Mixers as well as a variety of committees and initiatives. This is a great opportunity to highlight a recent success, promote a passion project, or use your network and experience to benefit current Hostos students and your fellow alums. Introducing our new segment: the Scholarship Spotlight. Each newsletter will feature one of the many scholarship opportunities for students at Hostos. Our first feature, the Circle of 100 Emergency Fund Scholarship, has been a resource for students since 2007. This fund provides financial assistance to students nearing graduation who need additional support to reach their academic goals. The scholarship was started in 2007 by three long-serving members of the Hostos family: the late Professor Emeritus Gerald Meyer, former Director of Alumni Relations Nydia Edgecombe, and former Assistant Dean of Student Development and Enrollment Management (SDEM) Virginia Paris. Since 2007, this program has awarded more than $100,000 to nearly 230 students.
The Hostos Circle of 100 Tree of Life was created to encourage friends of the College to support this important fund. Donors who give at least $1,000 are honored with a leaf bearing their name or a brief message of their choice.
