Volume 5 No. 38| October 13, 2023

Sometimes my wandering Facebook fingers lead me to a completely unexpected happy find and today was one of those times -- the water ski team at Cypress Gardens! The winter schedule is posted below. I'm there!

If you're responsible for promoting an arts-related event, send in details using the format at the end of this email. There's no charge for basic calendar listings but your advertising flyer that includes a link to your website will do more to catch readers' attention. Please support small, local businesses. Arts Blast is one of them, so if you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, consider advertising it in Arts Blast!

COME HUNGRY, FULL DINNER MENU AVAILABLE AT BOTH SHOWTIMES.

The Pelican Island Conservation Society is sponsoring the ninth annual Indian River Bird & Nature Art Show in conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 8-14, 2023. The event is installed at the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso through October 27, with other activities taking place “in the field” during the month.  For more information, visit the ELC at www.discoverelc.org or call 772-589-5050.

The Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the nation’s first Refuge, established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt, will be celebrating the National Wildlife Refuge Week with extra volunteers onsite to provide information and answer questions. In addition, they will be available to assist those needing transport to reach some of the viewing areas along the trails. You may wish to check their Facebook page for possible updates and information, at www.facebook.com/PelicanIslandNWR.

Saturday, October 14, 3:30 to 5:30pm. Join us for a memorable cruise with some delectable treats, while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Indian River Lagoon and wildlife. We will arrive at Pelican Island as some of the birds begin to return for their evening roost. The cruise takes place on the Environmental Learning Center’s pontoon boat and we will be accompanied by one of their naturalists.

This cruise departs and returns to Jones Pier at 7770 Jungle Trail in Indian River Shores.

Advance eservations are required at $70 per person.

There is public parking at Jones Pier and restrooms. Please arrive early to check in and use the restrooms, (there are no restrooms onboard), as the cruise departs promptly at 3:30pm. Please note that refunds will be provided only if the trip cancels due to weather, at the discretion of the ELC captain. There are NO refunds if you miss the boat! You do not need to check in at the ELC - please arrive at Jones Pier!

Long anticipated, The Burial, the story of a case won by dynamic Fort Pierce attorney Willie E. Gary, is now available on Amazon Prime. "Inspired by true events, when a handshake deal goes sour, funeral home owner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones) enlists charismatic attorney Willie E. Gary (Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx) to save his family business. Tempers flare and laughter ensues as the unlikely pair bond while exposing corporate corruption and racial injustice in this inspirational, triumphant story."

  • November 12th

New Snail Named After Jimmy Buffet’s Song!

Just in from Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum:

Very fittingly, a new marine snail was named this week after Jimmy Buffet’s best-known song, Margaritaville. Cayo margarita is a new species of worm snail from the Florida Keys reported by Rüdiger Bieler and collaborators that made the national news, including a nice article on CNN “Space + Science” online news. The bright lemon-yellow color of the snail’s “skin” provided the initial inspiration for the scientific name of the species. (And the genus name Cayo—low island, or key, in Spanish—honors the localities where the species were originally found.) Cayo margarita lives attached to pieces and blocks of dead corals and catches its prey using a mucus net that ensnares zooplankton. Read the original scientific report here.
