Hot Spring County 4-H Happenings May 2018
Summer is knocking on the door and will be here before we know it! As of today, Rachel will go back to being the primary contact for our 4-H program temporarily. Mr. Jason has accepted a position as the new agriculture teacher at Mountain Pine. He wanted to tell everyone how much he enjoyed the program here, and if he could ever be of any help, to just reach out to him. We wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.

4-H Fishing Derby is only a few days away!
The annual Hot Spring County 4-H Fishing Derby will be held Thursday, May 3rd at the Hendrix Farm.
This is one of the longest traditions in the Hot Spring County 4-H program. 4-Hers will be assisting students with disabilities from across Hot Spring County enjoy a fun filled day.
We already have over 200 students signed up to participate. All 4-Hers and leaders are encouraged to come out and help with this annual event. Help will be needed for those fishing, setting up that morning, serving lunch, and cleaning up following the event. It will be helpful for each volunteer to bring a towel and a pair of plyers.
The Maurice Hendrix Farm, 2888 Hendrix Road, Malvern, Arkansas, located on County Road 62 will again be the site for this activity.
This project was started over thirty five years ago by the Hot Spring County 4-H Teen Leader group as a way to provide a recreational outlet to these special students. Fish are provided by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Trophies and food have been donated by local individuals and businesses in past years.

The 2018 Teen Leader Conference (TLC) is scheduled for June 12 - 15, 2018 at the Arkansas 4-H Center. Registration is now available via 4HOnline and is named  "2018 Teen Leader Conference". Ambassadors and state officers arrive on June 12, and delegates arrive on June 13. The officers and ambassadors have been working hard to make sure it's a great conference. Any senior 4-H member may register as a delegate. Only Ambassadors and State Officers will attend the pre-conference. Several events take place during TLC including:

Ambassador Pre-conference (June 12)
Ambassador Interviews (June 13)
Teen Star/Hall of Fame Banquet (June 13)
Teen Leader Conference led by Ambassadors (June 13-15)

Price:        $185 for delegates & adults
                 $145 for Ambassadors

Deadline:  May 18, 2018

Teen Star/Hall of Fame Banquet Servers
We invite younger 4-H'er ages 11-14 (not yet Seniors) to set up, serve, and clean up at the banquet. We feed them dinner and give them a green bow tie for their trouble. They should wear a white, collared button-down shirt (ironed), black pants (ironed), and comfortable black shoes. No heels. The parents may purchase a reduced-cost dinner ($10) if they wish, but we cannot guarantee seating during the banquet. We usually reserve a separate room for parents and servers to dine. The servers eat after they serve the meal and the crowd moves to the auditorium. After eating, servers help clean up the cafeteria. The servers may sign up and parents may pay for their meal via 4HOnline. The event is named  "2018 Hall of Fame Banquet Server Application" and is now open. The servers will receive a full training session prior to serving. The deadline for servers to sign up is  June 1, 2018.

County Clover 4-H Camp- July 16th-20th

We are very excited to be returning to the Arkansas 4-H Center for a portion of County Clover Camp this year. We will be at 4-H Center Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday-Friday will be Day Camps at our 4-H Center here in Malvern.

While at the 4-H Center all 4-H members are invited to come with us, we will spend Monday night at the Center. Parents are also invited to help chaperone, as long as you are approved  in 4-H Online as a volunteer and have had Overnight Chaperone Training. If  you have not, get with Rachel ASAP, this process can take some time. The cost to attend the 4-H Center portion of camp will be $62.50. There is no cost to attend the Day Camps held in Malvern. I encourage everyone to attend as much as camp as possible.

If anyone is interested in serving on the planning committee for camp we will have a meeting Monday, May 21st at 4:30 pm at the 4-H Center. The topics for camp will be announced in the June 4-H Newsletter.
District O-Rama- Tuesday, June 19th- Ouachita High
District O'Rama will be here before we know it. It will kickoff around 10 am with the General Assembly and finish around 3:00 pm. I would like all of our 4-Hers there by 9:30. We have several 4-Hers signed up to compete. We also have 6 4-Hers who will be recognized as Record Book Winners and Teen Stars. There are still several open categories, but we must get you signed up soon in order to compete. Even parents coming to watch need to sign up with the office, so we can make name tags for you.

Since we will be hosting the event, I would love to see a large group from Hot Spring County come out to support our 4-Hers. We will also be serving lunch. I will need several parents to help with this project. Please let me know if you are willing to help. Lunch help will be needed roughly from 11 am-1 pm. Last year we won the attendance award, I would love to see us bring it home two years in a row. This year we will also be pushing for the spirit award. If you have an idea, please share it with your club leader so we can get a county plan by June 1st!

We will also need some help on Monday afternoon going over to the high school and putting up signs, tables, etc. This would also be a great opportunity to do a walk through with volunteers that can help direct traffic the next day.  Please just let Rachel know if you can make it.

Ross Photography Contest- County Deadline May 18th
It's time for the Ross Foundation 4-H Photography Contest. The contest provides an opportunity for Arkansas 4-H'ers to demonstrate, compete and exhibit their photography skills.
