Vet Science Club

Here in Hot Spring County, the 4-H Veterinary Science Program has been a big hit. We are  gearing up to start a new Curriculum Rotation in January of 2019. This club meets the first Monday every month at 6:00pm at the 4-H Center. You can enroll in 4-H Online as a primary or secondary club.

This Project-Based Community Club is open
to all 4-H members. However, you must be at least 14 to be involved in the curriculum side of the program for certification. 4-Hers must complete one full year of curriculum and be 16 years old, before they are placed with a veterinarian for shadowing. Younger 4-Hers can still be involved in club activities and field trips.
Along with the curriculum, there is a skills check off covering office and hospital procedures, communication and client relations, pharmacy and pharmacology, examination room procedures, small animal nursing, surgical preparation and assisting, laboratory procedures, and radiology and ultrasound imaging.

As a county club we also go on field trips to veterinary hospitals, other animal based facilities, and universities with veterinary programs.

There are also state based activities including Veterinary Science Camp and a field trip to one of the Veterinary School's Open House Event.

Once a 4-Her has completed the 3 year curriculum, skills check off, and passed the final exam, they will become a Certified Veterinary Assistant.

If you are interested in joining, please get with Rachel at the Extension Office and plan on coming to our October 1st meeting at 6:00pm at the 4-H Center.
