Hope4NC Weekly Report

Burke County Community Produce Distribution

Hope4NC teams continue to provide help and healing to those recovering from Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. In Burke County, our Partners Health teams were actively engaged in a community produce distribution event. The initiative distributed over 300 pounds of fresh produce to residents in need while also providing Hope4NC materials and information on available resources.

During the event, staff connected with a family experiencing homelessness after exhausting emergency hotel vouchers and resorting to living in their vehicle. Through swift action, the team coordinated with Project Your Home to provide the family with temporary housing while more a permanent arrangement is made.

North Carolina Statewide Overdose Surveillance

The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch of the NCDHHS Division of Public Health has announced an 8% overall decrease in suspected drug overdose deaths from January to May of 2025 when compared to the same time period in 2024. Despite this positive trend, both fatal and non-fatal overdose indicators are slowly increasing in 2025 after over a year of steady decreases.

Maintaining positive momentum in reducing overdoses is a major priority for NCDHHS and DMHDDSUS. Medicaid expansion is one factor critical to this progress. Thanks to Medicaid expansion, more North Carolinians now have access to mental health and substance use treatment. Overdoses have decreased since expanding Medicaid, with suspected overdose deaths decreasing by 27% from 2023 to 2024 and visits to emergency departments for overdose decreasing 29% during that same time.

DMH/DD/SUS’ work has also contributed significantly to the reduction in overdose deaths, thanks to increased distribution of life-saving naloxone, increased access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), strengthening integrated care in Federally Qualified Health Centers and primary care practices, as well as promoting harm reduction strategies through Syringe Services Programs.
