The Secretary will also visit a Healthy Opportunities Pilot program providing essential services to people recovering from the storm. | | DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie Shares Prevention and Recovery Strategies at the 2025 Adolescent SUD Conference | | |
DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie delivered a message on substance use prevention to over 700 mental health and substance use professionals and advocates at the Governor's Institute Adolescent SUD Conference last week.
This year’s event featured panels on neurobiology and the adolescent brain, evolving substance use, and links to suicidality and trauma. One in 13, or 7.7% of all North Carolina youth ages 12-17, have a substance use disorder. Only 1% of those who are Medicaid-enrolled, and less than 1% who are uninsured, were receiving treatment in 2023.
The DMHDDSUS strategic plan priorities of increasing access to care across the state and preventing substance misuse and overdose include strategies that target youth. The annual conference is sponsored by the Governor’s Institute and NCDHHS.

Hope4NC Vaya Health teams are on the ground in Buncombe County helping community organizers provide emotional, spiritual and physical support to those who are trying to rebuild after Hurricane Helene. At the Land of Sky United Church of Christ in Asheville, Vaya Teams helped a single mother of two who had lost her job due to the storm.
The community center where she worked was destroyed and remains closed due to funding shortages, leaving her struggling with a profound loss of connection. Hope4NC Vaya Health teams provided guidance on local community centers where she could rebuild relationships and engage in activities to foster a renewed sense of belonging.
