DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie Awarded for
Extraordinary Contributions to NC MH/DD/SUS System
| | The North Carolina Providers Council awarded Director Kelly Crosbie the Steve Jordan Lighthouse Award at their annual conference in Asheville on September 15. The award honors a person who has made an extraordinary contribution to the mental health, substance use, and intellectual and developmental disabilities service systems in North Carolina. Honorees demonstrate efforts to build a strong network of community-based and community-accessible services, a primary goal in the Division’s five-year strategic plan. | | | The North Carolina Providers Council was organized to promote the overall improvement of both the quality of, and access to community support services for individuals who require supports to live in the communities across North Carolina. | | |
Chief Clinical Director Shares
Successful Mobile Crisis Response Model
| | DMH/DD/SUS Chief Clinical Director Lisa DeCiantis spoke at the first annual NC Coalition on Crisis and Alternative Response (NCCCAR) Summit held September 16-17. DeCiantis shared the benefits of the Mobile Outreach, Response, Engagement and Stabilization (MORES) program in responding to crises and connecting children, adolescents and families to specialized services quickly, as well as providing follow-up care. | | | North Carolina became “First in Co-Response” with the establishment of Chapel Hill’s Crisis Unit in 1973. Across the state, dozens of other counties and municipalities have followed suit, with the largest growth occurring in the last 5-7 years. At the event, alternative response programs in and around the state shared knowledge and collaborated to support the growth and practice of crisis response. | | As the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene approaches, it’s a good time to stop, reflect and celebrate what our Hope4NC teams have done to help people recover and rebuild in Western North Carolina. At the Asheville, Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) Gala in August, a few of our Hope4NC team members joined community leaders, pastors and partners to reflect on the progress made and the healing that has taken place. What began as a fundraising gala evolved into a celebration of community, a recognition of unified recovery efforts, and a hopeful reminder of the future we are building together. | | | National Suicide Prevention Month: Week Four Focuses on Promoting Dignity Through Connection | | As we wrap up Suicide Prevention Month, we acknowledge the need for dignity and connection in the effort to prevent suicide. In that vein, we celebrate the Stronger Together Conference that was held in Rocky Mount on September 20. The conference was an interactive experience centered on cultural connection, creative expression and community care. It was designed to offer culturally competent and trauma-informed resources to support wellness for Black youth and young adults. | | | |
A sharp increase nationally in suicide rates among young Black males impelled the development of the Black Youth Suicide Prevention Action Plan, which focuses on peer support, safe firearm and medication storage, better coordination, and raising awareness. The Stronger Together Conference brought a strong element of connection and collaboration to that work. We commit to continuing the work of preventing suicide in North Carolina and are grateful for the collaboration with our many partners.
