The 2023-2024 North Carolina Safer Syringe Initiative (NCSSI) Annual Report is now available. This report highlights the lifesaving work syringe services programs (SSPs) continue to do across the state to expand overdose prevention strategies and reduce disease transmission through sterile syringe access. SSPs and their participants have been at the frontlines of addressing the intersecting epidemics of overdose and infectious disease through naloxone distribution, expanding the reach and scope of their programs, and meeting people where they are to help address their health needs.
By the end of the 2023-2024 reporting period (June 30, 2024), there were 50 registered SSPs serving 62 counties and 1 federally recognized tribe in NC. These programs made over 113,000 total contacts, distributed over 113,000 naloxone kits, and received over 16,000 reports of lives saved through overdose reversals. SSPs distributed 8.2 million syringes in the 2023-2024 reporting year. To prevent risk of infectious diseases, a new, sterile syringe is recommended for each use. Increases in the number of syringes distributed by a program highlight success in expanding syringe access. Read the full 4-page Annual Report.
