DMHDDSUS Celebrates Partnership with UCA WAVES

Expanding Access to Mental Health Care for AAPI Communities

DMHDDSUS staff recently attended an event hosted by UCA WAVES (United Chinese Americans Wellness, Advocacy, Voices, Education, and Support) to join in their efforts to raise awareness of the mental health challenges that young Asian Americans face due to familial, cultural, and societal factors. Director Kelly Crosbie met with the UCA WAVES Director Jian (Lily) Chen, to show support for the event held on January 31, 2025. In addition to celebrating the Lunar New Year, the event raised over $6,000 to assist a local family experiencing hardship through the Karen Community Farm at Oaky Grove.

As a recipient of a DMHDDSUS Mental Health Block Grant, UCA WAVES promotes community resource building, culturally sensitive interventions, and civic engagement to improve youth mental health and influence public policies for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Their mission aligns with DMHDDSUS' commitment to provide services that promote equity, inclusivity, and accessibility for all North Carolinians.

Join North Carolina Black Youth Wellness

Community of Practice and Education

Are you interested in wellness among Black youth in NC? If so, join the North Carolina Black Youth Wellness Community of Practice and Education (COPE). Members will collectively address solutions to decrease stigma by promoting and implementing culturally relevant crisis care and suicide prevention for Black youth.

DMHDDSUS was awarded a grant from SAMHSA for a new 5-year suicide prevention state action plan focusing on support for black youth. The project emerged from North Carolina’s participation in SAMHSA’s Black Youth Suicide Policy Academy. These funds will support a cross-sector collaborative to implement interventions across the state and reduce suicide among black youth. The COPE team will serve as community champions helping to increase trust and disseminate information throughout the state. We encourage community partners from diverse backgrounds and identities to apply for COPE membership by February 28, 2025.
