On December 12, 2025, DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie and division representatives visited the Tia Hart Peer Recovery Community Center (RCC) in Raeford to engage with local partners and explore opportunities to strengthen peer-led recovery support across the region. The team joined Program Director Shirley Hart and her staff, many of whom are family members, in unpacking several hundred pounds of food generously donated by the local commissary.
This effort reflects Tia Hart RCC’s ongoing commitment to providing year-round food boxes to individuals and families in need, in partnership with local organizations like the commissary and Food Lion. The visit concluded with a meaningful discussion about the growing and evolving needs of the community and how Tia Hart RCC can continue to expand its services to meet those needs.
| | | DMH/DD/SUS Supports Recovery Efforts in Wilson County | | |
On December 16, 2025, DMH/DD/SUS Director Kelly Crosbie, along with division representatives, visited Wilson County RC3 Peer Recovery Community Center to strengthen collaboration and build local partnerships that support recovery initiatives. The visit featured conversations with the Wilson Warbirds baseball team about prevention, anti-stigma efforts and promoting the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
The team also toured the Wilson County Mobile Unit, which provides free medical and harm reduction services, and joined a Narcan training for local businesses to boost community safety. Finally, they met with RC3’s Youth Coalition to support recovery-focused activities for young people. This visit reflects DMH/DD/SUS’s ongoing commitment to collaboration, harm reduction, and community engagement.
| | | NC Selected for 2026 Crisis Systems Design Policy Academy | | |
North Carolina has been selected to join the 2026 Crisis Systems Design Policy Academy, a national initiative led by the 988 Crisis Systems Response Training and Technical Assistance Center and the SAMHSA Behavioral Health Crisis Coordinating Office. This prestigious opportunity will allow our state to collaborate with national experts and other states to strengthen crisis response systems and improve outcomes for individuals experiencing mental health crises.
The Academy kicks off with an in-person convening in Milwaukee on March 10-11, 2026, followed by six months of technical assistance and a site visit in North Carolina. Teams will engage in strategic planning, implementation support, and coordination efforts to advance crisis care statewide. For more information, contact Acting Crisis Services Lead Brittany Jones.

The purpose of the Brain Injury Advisory Council (BIAC) is to review the nature and cause of traumatic and other acquired brain injuries in North Carolina.
The Council also makes recommendations to the Governor, the General Assembly, and the Secretary of Health and Human Services regarding the planning, development, funding, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide service delivery system to address the needs of brain injury survivors. There are virtual and in-person attendance options. All BIAC meetings are open to the public.

The State Consumer and Family Advisory Committee (SCFAC) advises NCDHHS and the General Assembly on the planning and management of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services (DMH/DD/SUS).
The monthly meeting brings together individuals with lived experience of mental health, developmental disabilities, substance use, and traumatic brain injury (MH/DD/SU/TBI), as well as family members and advocates, to provide input and guidance in shaping policy and identifying service gaps. Meetings include updates from state agencies, discussions on current issues impacting MH/DD/SU/TBI services, and opportunities for public comment. All SCFAC meetings are open to the public.
