Speech and Debate Team Wins Season Opener
The Speech and Debate Team won its season opener on Sept. 18 for the third straight year! Co-captain Ben Who ’24 finished in first place in the advanced division, earning a spot at the world championship in South Africa. Ben and his partner, Meilan Antonucci ’24, were the first place advanced pair. Read more.

Swimathon Makes a Splash
A dedicated group of swimmers dove into Lake Wononscopomuc for the 28th annual Hotchkiss Swimathon on Sept. 17. They raised funds for Special Olympics Connecticut and Special Olympics Slovakia, two organizations that are helping Ukrainian refugees. Read more.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
De Colores, the affinity group for Latinx and Hispanic-identifying students, is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 with many events, including Latin music in the Dining Hall on Fridays, a student performance, and an all-School talk and class visits by Harvard professor Bruno Carvalho ’00.

Delegation Travels to England
A group of students traveled to England from Sept. 16-25 to participate in the Round Square conference. They learned about the ideals of democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership, internationalism, and service from worldwide peers and inspiring speakers. Read reflections of their journey.

Preston Lecture Shares Influential Work of John Hersey '32
During the Preston Lecture on Sept. 20, students learned how journalist John Hersey ’32 helped expose the effects of nuclear weapons detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Journalist, historian, and bestselling author Lesley Blume spoke about her book, Fallout: The Hiroshima Cover-Up and the Reporter Who Revealed it to the World, and shared stories of Hersey’s career and time at Hotchkiss. “To this day, his article shows the power of reporting at its best,” Blume told the crowd of students. “It is widely considered one of the most influential works of journalism ever written, if not the most influential.” Blume also met the inaugural Hersey Scholars—members of the Class of 2023 who are honing their research skills through this new program.

Crop Walk for Food Pantry
St. Luke's hosted its annual Crop Walk on Sept. 25 to support the local food pantry and its efforts to address food insecurity in surrounding towns. Members of the Hotchkiss community donated $1,110 for this important cause!

Hotchkiss Sailor Earns Trophy
Cal Kinnear '25 represented Hotchkiss at the District Championship Regatta Sept. 24-25. He placed first and won the Healy Trophy, which is awarded by the New England Schools Sailing Association to the top singlehanded sailor in New England.

Enjoy Two Concerts in October
The Hotchkiss Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Dvořák’s Cello Concerto on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. with guest conductor Mariusz Smolij of Poland and cellist Alexander Hülshoff of Germany. The Fine Arts Quartet featuring Fabio and Gisele Witkowski on piano and Alexander Bickard on bass will perform rare chamber music by George Enescu on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. Both concerts are free and will be held in Katherine M. Elfers Hall.

Student Musicians Earn Prizes
Daniel Li '24 earned first prize and Kira Nickerson '25 earned third prize in the junior category at the prestigious 12th International Piano Competition María Herrero in Spain over the summer. They performed a challenging repertoire of works by Liszt, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Ginastera.

Dramatic Association Entertains
The Hotchkiss Dramatic Association hosted its first blackbox performance of three short plays at the Main Circle on Sept. 14. Also, the cast and crew has been selected for the group’s fall production of Into the Woods, which will be performed Nov. 10-13.

Student Work Displayed in Exhibition
The works of 16 Hotchkiss students were on display in the Bruce Museum’s virtual “iCreate” exhibition. Emily Grimm '25 and Maya Aché Robinson '24 had pieces in the final curated group of 50 works. Read more.

Ellen Moon's Art at Tremaine
The Tremaine Art Gallery is presenting an exhibit of works by Ellen Moon P’08 through Oct. 22. Moon's watercolor paintings depict the landscapes of Connecticut’s Northwest Corner. She also creates embroidered works in fiber and designs sets, masks, and costumes for the Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater. Read more.

Summer Portals Application Opens Nov. 1 - Save the Date!
More information is coming soon on the Summer Portals program, which offers opportunities for middle and high-school age students to hone a talent or try something new while experiencing the unique learning community that is Hotchkiss. Portals is adding programs in fly-fishing and SAT/ACT/SSAT test prep. The Concord Review will host one of its programs on campus, which is a wonderful opportunity to engage in historical research and writing with a goal of publication.
