AAHOA Welcomes Reopening of the Federal Government

AAHOA welcomes the reopening of the federal government following passage by Congress and the President's signature yesterday. The weeks-long shutdown disrupted travel, slowed economic activity, and created uncertainty across the hospitality industry. "We're relieved to see government operations resume so the focus can return to supporting economic stability and growth," said AAHOA Chairman Kamalesh (KP) Patel.

AAHOA Member's Philanthropy Has a Ripple Effect

In 2014, Sumit Dalwadi and his three sisters founded Dalwadi Hospitality Management, and they chose a meaningful tagline for their work: Doing Hospitality Better. That same year, they chose to renovate their Holiday Inn Express, transforming it into an independent property called Hotel Ylem, where they hoped to focus on giving back. That's exactly what Dalwadi has done – from the vendors he partners with to the quarterly events he hosts and the mural that graces the hotel's facade, philanthropy takes center stage. Learn more about Dalwadi, his journey in the industry, and the purposeful space he's cultivated in the November issue of Today's Hotelier.

Merchants Call for Proposed Settlement in Antitrust Litigation to be Rejected

The Merchants Payments Coalition (MPC), of which AAHOA is a member, called for a U.S. District Judge to reject a proposed settlement in a 2005 class-action lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard's credit card "swipe" fee practices. MPC said the proposed settlement would allow Visa and Mastercard to continue to raise their fees, and it does not overcome the reasons a 2016 settlement was rejected. The lawsuit alleges both companies violate federal antitrust law by centrally price-fixing swipe fees charged by all banks that issue cards under their brands, leaving small businesses and consumers to pay the price.

American Hotels are Feeling the Sting as the Shutdown Keeps Rooms Empty

IN THE MARKET

U.S. RevPAR +6.2% y/y last week; Easy election week y/y comp. Continued hurricane comp and government shutdown impact

As Truist Securities wrote, "Overall, U.S. RevPAR was +6.2% y/y for the week ending 11/8/2025, per STR/CoStar, above the prior week's result of -2.3% y/y and above the trailing 10-week average of -1.2% y/y. Last week's results were primarily impacted by two factors: the easy 2024 Election Day comp (limited business travel last year) and the continued hard y/y comp from hurricane-related displacement. The government shutdown also depressed demand. All of these results were as expected. Results were very bifurcated between full-service (RevPAR +12-18% y/y) and Economy (-6.1%). Unsurprisingly Group RevPAR was very positive led by demand; last week Group RevPAR was +24.1%. Upscale RevPAR: +6.0% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +1.7% y/y."
