House of Ruth Happenings!
Residential Program Kitchen & Dining Room Remodel

House of Ruth was able to renovate the kitchen and dining room in our 55-bed shelter with the support of capital grants from The Ahmanson Foundation and the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The goal of the renovation was to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming space for all our residents and staff to enjoy. Residential Services Director Kimberly Mason had the following to say about the recent renovation.

For many shelter residents, being able to prepare meals in a safe and welcoming space, where equipment is functional, accessible, and available, is invaluable. The equipment, space, and environment in the new shelter kitchen and dining area is functional, easily accessible to all residents, and provides accommodation to individuals with disabilities. It also provides a space that is welcoming to children while also addressing the need for safety. The kitchen/dining room offers residents a calm, nurturing and beautiful environment where families gather safely and share mealtimes with each other. Preparing and sharing food with family, friends, and another human being can be so healing and renewing. This is undoubtedly one of the most important gifts that the shelter kitchen and dining room renovation has and will continue to give to residents.

Last year hundreds of families were able to access nutritious food from our renovated kitchen. Please take a moment to look at the before and after pictures of our kitchen and dining room renovation.
Vision to Learn & House of Ruth Back to School Community Event

With back-to-school right around the corner House of Ruth and Vision to Learn, a non-profit specializing in providing free eye exams and glasses to children from underserved communities, partnered up for a Back-to-School Community Event. Families were offered free eye exams, glasses, backpacks, school supplies, clothing, undergarments, and shoes. More than 30 families participated in this two-day event and are now fully prepared for the new school year to commence. Theresa a House of Ruth client stated, “thanks to House of Ruth and Vison to Learn, we are now fully stocked with everything needed to begin the school year, we haven’t felt this special and taken care of in a long time.”

For many House of Ruth survivors, this event offered the only back to school resources they can access. A special shout out to Sabrina Almaraz, Community Services Manager, and her team for coordinating and executing this event. Also, a special thanks to Vision to Learn for providing eye exams and glasses onsite to House of Ruth families.
