House of Ruth Happenings!
Negative Implications for Survivors of Domestic Violence After Roe v Wade is Overturned

In a disturbing turn of events last month, The Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, eliminating a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. Now each state has the power to decide if a woman can access a safe abortion in their state. Currently there are several states that have enacted trigger laws criminalizing safe abortions even in instances of rape or incest.

House of Ruth is devastated by this ruling and the negative implications this will have on victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault nationwide. Every year, 3 million people become pregnant from assault (CDC 2020). Thirty percent of people who are raped by an intimate partner, experienced reproductive coercion, which includes explicit attempts to impregnate a partner against their will, control outcomes of pregnancy, coerce a partner to have unprotected sex, and interfere with contraceptive methods to exert power and control in the relationship. According to a study published last year in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Journal, homicide is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period in the United States. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of elevated risk for homicide among all females of reproductive age. (Wallace, M, Gillispie-bell, V, Cruz, K., Davis, K., & Vilda, D. Homicide During Pregnancy and the Post-Partum period in the United States, Obstetrics & Gynecology: November 2021 - Volume 138 - Issue 5 - p 762-769).

House of Ruth will continue providing safety, support, and advocacy to those fleeing domestic violence. “A person should always have the ability to make choices about their body. House of Ruth will always support pro-choice”-Pat Bell House of Ruth CEO.

There are many ways you can get involved to fight this injustice, volunteer at your local women’s organization, be vocal and participate in a women’s march, get educated on your rights or donate now.
Moveable Feast Highlights

Here are some highlights from the Moveable Feast Charity Dinner, where dinner hosts welcomed House of Ruth supporters and prepared delicious 5 course meals to raise funds for survivors of domestic violence.

We would like to thank Mi Chi & Gary Jensen for graciously hosting the cocktail reception in their lovely home.  A big shout out Robin Leonhard and her volunteer ladies for catering the reception. Finally, we are grateful to all the hosts, guests, attendees, and sponsors who supported our first in-person event since the pandemic.
