Greetings FAMUly!

This month's issue of the Housing Newsletter is all about embodying a hero's mindset and actions. But not just any hero – a SUPERhero.

With that in mind, one of the University Housing's teams superpowers is endurance. Endurance is defined as the act of working very hard without stopping even in the face of difficult situations or pain.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, the FAMU Office of University Housing has been one of few offices on campus that never closed due to our business's nature. Someone was in the Housing office every workday, and our maintenance staff remained on campus or on-call 24 hours a day to respond to resident needs.

The need to take care of our residents, arrange for them to get their belongings when the Spring Semester moved to remote learning abruptly, maintain the buildings, and pivot as needed as we planned to welcome students back to the residence halls has been a herculean task. Yet, we have endured because everyone did their part to make the plan work. Dealing with COVID-19 has and continues to be a prolonged stressful activity.

When you are a 24hr, 7 days a week operation, you know that "An individual cannot work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In fact, in all of human existence, no one has ever done it. And yet, we live in a society that demands this kind of service, support, and availability.

This is a critical team superpower. Whereas an individual can work well for 8 to 10 hours a day, with maximum productivity for only about 3-4 hours of that time, a team can cover every day of every week or every year. In fact, it is the only way to do it unless a system is fully automated. Endurance is a major team superpower. (from The Superpowers of a Team by Deb Ingino).

Kudos to the University Housing Team for its endurance. Together "we" have made it through and will continue to run this race to the end.
