Reading proficiently by 3rd grade is the key measure of the Every Child Thrives partnership's school success initiatives.

According to the Children's Reading Foundation: “Without a strong foundation in reading, children are left behind at the beginning of their education. They lag in every class, year after year because more than 85 percent of the curriculum is taught by reading. And by the end of third grade, 74 percent of struggling readers won’t ever catch up. In fact, one of the most important predictors of graduating from high school is reading proficiently by the end of third grade.”

To that end, we have supported Wisconsin Reads programming in 3 elementary schools (Webster and Douglas in the Watertown Unified School District, and Dodgeland Elementary in Juneau).

Program results for the last school year indicate 135 students received one-on-one tutoring help through Wisconsin Reads. While the overall percent of kids exceeding the targeted growth goal decreased (to 69.6%), there were real bright spots:

  • Dodgeland increased from 53% to 70% over the course of a single year.
  • Despite the decline in exceeding growth, ALL participating schools saw an increase in their 3rd grade reading proficiency scores their first year in the program compared to the year prior.

The Foundation has expanded investment in Wisconsin Reads for the 2023-24 school year to seven schools: Dodgeland Elementary (Dodgeland School District); Douglas, Webster and Schurz Elementaries (Watertown Unified School District); and East, West and Sullivan Elementaries (School District of Jefferson).
