Housing is Healthcare Program Chosen by Congress
On February 14th, our agency proudly stood alongside Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and community partners to announce that Family Promise of Morris County, NJ received a Congressionally Directed Spending Award specifically for our Housing is Healthcare for Economic Development Project!
There is a notable cost savings from reduced healthcare, prison, and hospital visits when those experiencing homelessness become housed. Per the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, studies have found that leaving a person to remain chronically homeless costs taxpayers as much as $30,000 to $50,000 per year and increases trauma, poor health, and quality of life for those experiencing homelessness. This pilot project will include a study on homelessness, jail and hospital stays, and the cost to these systems and the people directly impacted.
Rep. Sherrill was instrumental in securing the funding specifically for this new project, and Family Promise of Morris County will work with local community partners such as Hope One and Zufall Health to provide preventive healthcare and economic opportunities to Morris County families.

Black History Month
Last month we celebrated Black History Month! Did you know that the origin of Black History Month began in 1926? The second week of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In the late 1960s, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month on college campuses, and Gerald Ford established the first Black History Month in 1976. Each year, the month has a specific theme and this year it is Black Resistance to highlight how Black and African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression.

Our Promise Guest Receives Employment!
When Jorge* first came to Our Promise Drop-In Center, he had been living in his car and struggling with his mental health. Within 24 hours, Our Promise staff connected Jorge to a local health provider, where he received vital care. Upon his return, he felt ready to continue his housing journey with his new support system.
Family Promise staff helped Jorge apply for benefits, fill out paperwork, and offered Our Promise as his mailing address. Our Promise staff described Jorge's “smiling face walking through the door” as a highlight of their day.
Recently, Jorge announced that he secured a job at a local grocery store! He expressed his gratitude for the support Our Promise provided. Congratulations, Jorge! What an honor it is to help our guests reach their goals!
