Houston Area Urban League Celebrates Women’s History Month with Inspiring Reception Honoring Trailblazing Women Leaders

Held at HAUL’s historic landmark administrative building at 1301 Texas, the reception brought together community leaders for an evening of networking, reflection, and recognition of women whose leadership continues to shape industries, strengthen communities, and expand opportunities for future generations. 

Kelly P. Hodges, Director of Development and Communications, welcomed guests and set the tone for the evening, emphasizing the importance of honoring women who lead with purpose and create pathways for progress. 

Houston Area Urban League President and CEO Judson W. Robinson III delivered opening remarks, highlighting the historic and ongoing role of women in advancing equity and opportunity. 

“The story of the Urban League is, in many ways, a story of women’s leadership, vision, and influence,” said Robinson. “From our founding to today, women have not only supported this work, but they have also defined it. We celebrate those who continue to create opportunity, lead with purpose, and shape a stronger, more equitable future for Houston.” 

Executive Vice President Eric Goodie followed with an impactful overview of HAUL’s work, noting that in 2025 alone, the organization served over 20,000 individuals and reached over 400,000 through workforce development, education, housing, health and entrepreneurship programs. He emphasized that women remain central to this progress, serving as leaders, innovators, and changemakers within their communities.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of several influential women whose service and leadership have made a lasting impact: 

• Dr. Laura Murillo, President & CEO of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 
• State Representative Senfronia Thompson, one of Texas’ longest-serving legislators 
• Houston City Councilmember Tiffany Thomas, champion for economic growth and community engagement 
• Mrs. Phyllis Turner-Brim, HAUL Board Chair and the first woman to hold the role in over 15 years 

“It is both an honor and a responsibility to serve as Board Chair at such a pivotal time for this organization,” said Turner-Brim. “The women we celebrate tonight represent the strength, resilience, and leadership that continues to move Houston forward. Together, we are building on a powerful legacy while creating new pathways for opportunity and impact.” 

Additional special recognitions were given to Sylvia Brooks, former President and CEO of HAUL for her enduring contributions to the organization and the Houston community. 

The program also highlighted the vital role of the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals and Guild, led by Dr. Jessica Sharp and Grace Chandler, respectively. These groups continue to cultivate emerging leaders, support community initiatives, and expand the organization’s reach across Houston. 

The evening concluded with closing remarks from Hodges, who thanked attendees, partners, and supporters, and encouraged continued engagement through advocacy, social media, and philanthropic support. 

“Tonight was a celebration of legacy, leadership, and the power of women working together to create change,” said Hodges. “We are grateful for the continued commitment of those who help us advance opportunity across our community.” 

The Houston Area Urban League also announced upcoming events, including the Advancing Opportunity Luncheon on June 26 and the Equal Opportunity Day Gala on December 12.
