Top Houston Food News: Mexico City-Inspired Bar & Restaurant Now Open in Montrose, Milkshake Shop Debuts in Cypress & More

A quick note: it's been a while since our fun guided group tour of Mexico City, so we're planning another trip! We're going to Germany in September! I'll be sending a full email about this soon with the nine-day itinerary (including flight days), but if you want to get that from me right now, shoot me an email. We have eight spots left, and it's a bucket-list-worthy opportunity to explore the culture and expand your culinary horizons.

A Mexico City–inspired cocktail bar and restaurant is now open in Montrose. 𝗕𝗮𝗿 𝗫𝗼𝗹𝗼, located at 223 Westheimer in the former Pling Dumpling space, operates as a day-to-night destination where morning coffee service transitions into an evening program centered on inventive cocktails and regionally rooted Mexican cuisine.

The concept is developed by Mexico City natives with backgrounds in hospitality and bar craft. The beverage program features a working laboratory with a focus on batched cocktails, drinks carbonated in-house and techniques such as clarification, dual distillation and infusion employed in full view of guests.

Coffee service is offered daily from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., and includes coffee sourced locally from Un Caffè Roastery, as well as from Veracruz and Oaxaca, alongside Mexican pastries. Coffee is poured through a Mavam Super Auto Under Counter Automatic Espresso Machine.

As the day progresses, the kitchen shifts to dishes that interpret regional flavors with contemporary technique such as scallop tostadas with chorizo foam, triple-cooked octopus with mole blanco, and blue corn tacos with Oaxacan cheese and potato foam topped with Baika caviar.

Design elements reference Mexican heritage, with volcanic rock and terracotta clay shaping a space intended to feel grounded and tactile. The name nods to the Xoloitzcuintle, an ancient Mexican dog breed.

MilkShake Factory is making its Houston-area debut with a new shop in Cypress, which is hosting a grand opening on Saturday, March 7, at 7040 Elyson Exchange Way. The location marks the brand’s first in the Greater Houston area as it continues expanding across Texas and beyond its Pittsburgh roots.

The grand opening is from noon to 4 p.m. and features buy-one-get-one-free shakes, sundaes and molten cups. The first 100 guests will receive a free MilkShake Factory T-shirt, the first person in line will score a gift basket and a DJ will keep the energy high throughout the afternoon.

The Cypress location is owned and operated by franchise partners Kent and Karen Schultz, who were drawn to the brand’s blend of old-fashioned hospitality and premium ingredients. Founded in 1914 as a soda fountain and chocolate shop, MilkShake Factory is known for its handspun milkshakes made with housemade ice cream prepared fresh in-store daily.

The Schultzes plan to grow with the brand, with two additional Houston-area locations already in development. (A Woodlands location is already listed as "coming soon" on the MilkShake Factory website.)

City Place in Spring is set to welcome Tony’s Italian Delicatessen to the ground floor of City Place 1 at 1700 City Plaza. The nearly 2,000-square-foot deli joins the mixed-use district as its third Houston-area location, extending the reach of the locally owned and operated eatery that has earned repeated placement on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the United States.

The shop is known for its generously packed Carnegie sandwiches served on signature Italian rolls, such as the Stallone, layered with capicola, sopressata, ham and salami dressed in sub oil, the Sophia, featuring roasted turkey and pesto mayo, and the Pacino stacked with mortadella, bacon, and provolone. 🧀

Stay tuned for future announcements and opening details.
