Bits and Pieces

May 20, 2025

This week, I sighed and realized that the blur of holidays marking the beginning of the year had passed us by. In my rearview mirror, I saw New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick's Day, Mother’s Day, and a handful of birthdays, family celebrations, and visits. This week, I have a bit of breathing room with nothing written on my calendar between Monday and Thursday, I'd best write SEWING on those empty spots, so I don’t forget it’s time for me to have some fun! I suggest that you pull out your calendar and make room for some time to join us at Sun Valley Quilts for learning, laughter, sewing, and celebrations! In addition to our repeating monthly classes, we have added several new ones to encourage you this summer. Please join us for…

Sew Sisters with Marilyn will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27th and 28th. This will be Marilyn’s last Sew Sisters session until the Fall. We invite you to join her in the classroom and work on a Dresden Plate project, or feel free to bring any project of your choosing! Marilyn is a whiz. If you need assistance, she can coach you through the challenging parts of any project! While Marilyn is vacationing and recharging her batteries, we don’t want your sewing skills to get rusty! We have updated our class calendar to give you an extra Open Sew day each month to be held in place of Sew Sister’s: Tuesday, and an extra Embroidery: Open Sew on the regular Sew Sister’s: Wednesday dates. Now, you’ll have twice the opportunities to sew with friends in our classroom this summer!

Barb J will be teaching the Holly Bag by Sallie Tomato on Saturday, May 31st – this is a slouchy, hobo-style bag designed for all levels of sewists, including beginners. The pattern works well with fabric, cork, and faux leather. And, the adjustable strap allows you to wear it as a traditional shoulder bag or as a crossbody bag. Join Barb in the classroom from 9:30 – 3:30 – register online or in the shop. JoAnn B will be teaching the Diva Wallet on Saturday, June 16th. This is the perfect wallet and is so simple to make. This pattern also works great with fabric, cork, or faux leather – perhaps you’ll make the Diva Wallet to go with our new Holly Bag.

Shelby has been asked to teach her Textile Art: Exploring Kime Komi class again, and it’s now on our calendar for Sunday, June 22nd. Join her for a creative journey into the art of Kimekomi, a traditional Japanese fabric-wrapping technique perfect for utilizing your quilting scraps! In this hands-on class, you'll learn how to transform leftover fabric into beautiful, textured pieces without needing a sewing machine, making it an ideal nighttime project. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or new to fabric arts, Kime Komi offers a relaxing and portable crafting experience. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover new ways to repurpose your materials. All skill levels are welcome! Bring your favorite scraps and let your creativity flow as you make stunning Kime Komi art to take home. Come prepared to enjoy an afternoon of inspiration, relaxation, and community.

Jan B has been asked to teach Embroidery: Freestanding Houseplants 2, a two-day class on June 24th and 25th. OESD has recently released their second Freestanding Houseplant design, and it’s time to bring this class back. The plants we will make are very realistic and beautiful with one hooping per leaf. You may choose which plant to do. Use fabrics in shades of your choice. Thread color is also your choice. Download your design from OESD, selecting either Freestanding Houseplants #PK50015 or Freestanding Houseplants 2 #13005. These beautiful plants are the favorite of any millennial who wants the look of a plant without the responsibility of watering it on a special schedule!

Most importantly, please take the time to write a very important June date on your calendar – June 7th is Barbara’s 15th Anniversary as the owner of Sun Valley Quilts! If you have joined us in prior years, you will remember that Barbara enjoys nothing more than providing you with the opportunity to receive gifts and have a piece of cake! Don’t worry – we’ll be serving cake all day! Shh, I have heard from a very reliable source that the sales and specials that day will be AMAZING!
