Here are the words Ofer gave at the Gala:
|
|
|
It was exactly one year ago when I stood here as a guest, being introduced to you. And now I’m standing here together with the singers and board, as your host - so glad that you all came.
In this passing year I found the WomenSing community to be an
appreciative and nurturing
community. I’ve seen it in little gestures of care and the friendships in the choir, I’ve seen it in letters I’ve received from audience members, and in the overwhelmingly generous support of patrons like you.
Like many successful “locally grown” organizations, WomenSing is a
labor of love
to all who are involved. Nonprofits and businesses who are rooted here – you can taste it in their cooking or baking, you can see it in their knitting, you can hear it in their music and see it in their eyes. It’s love.
|
|
|
Love motivates care – care about details and wanting to always add “one more” spice or element to make our creation perfect and unique.
The generosity and care that characterize WomenSing are best seen in the singers’
uncompromising
approach to the music. Come to our rehearsals any Wednesday night at 7:00, and you will see a snoozy group who’ve been up before the sun, working all day, at their jobs, businesses and homes. That’s at 7:00 p.m., but when we start singing at 7:15, or more often 7:18, a whiff of enthusiasm and energy fills the room.

The enthusiasm of the WomenSingers is
contagious
. You’ve seen it here, you’ve experienced it at our concerts. Our concerts this passing year have given
many
, unforgettable encounters with music. The vigor of our holiday concerts “
Beginning with a Bang
”, the sold-out and extraordinary evening program at Chabot Planetarium, where based on a brief survey, many in the audience have never been to a choral concert before. And the moving final concerts “
EarthRise
” where we sang about the planet, human migration and climate change. We sang in Medieval Farsi with wonderful accompaniment of cello, oud and percussion – it was very special.
Other activities this past year were a casual singalong event “
Winter Sing Thing
”, an outreach performance at Temple Sinai in Oakland, and an appreciation brunch event for WomenSing alumnae which was very meaningful.
|
|
|
We go into this coming year with even increased energy, as this next year is really “all this
and more
”. We are preparing a thought provoking holiday performance titled “
Winter Reflections
” and I hope to see you all there. In March we will repeat the multimedia format of Chabot with a movie screening –
LITTLE STONES
. It’s a multiple award-winning documentary, following four women around the world using art to create positive change in their communities. A graffiti artist, a dance therapist, a rapper, and a fashion designer who are doing inspiring and influential work. And again, we are only presenting this program once, so you’ll have to act quickly. A grand finale titled “Summer Ventures” in June, followed by a tour to Greece.
A word about this summer tour – like everything else in WomenSing, this tour is special. We are going to Greece - "
The Cradle of Western Civilization
", and in addition to performing with local choirs, going to all the touristic attractions, learning about the history and culture of Greece, and eating some great Mediterranean food…. But most importantly for me, we are going to take the message of our recent concert,
EarthRise
, into action. We planned a visit to a refugee camp near Athens. Europe has been slammed with refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Africa. We hear about them here, but we can’t really put a face to them. Now, although we cannot turn over their life circumstances with this brief visit, we can create a connection, show them that we care, and learn about their stories and life. We will sing to them in Arabic and English and do our best to give them hope.
|
|
|
In every performance we try to bring a message that matters. We try to break down barriers with our voices. We try to foster a local and global community that is based on expression and true listening.
You chose to include yourself among a special group of patrons within our WomenSing community and through your gifts, to ensure that we keep these voices soaring. I thank you for that, and for your involvement this past year. Keep writing me and approaching me after concerts. I value knowing what you care about, and again, I’m glad you are here.
Let’s keep growing together.
