How can you influence your horse's hind legs ?
  And WHEN?

Thrust, reach and engage
Your Horse's Hind Legs Do 3 Things:
Left: Your horse's (right) hind leg REACHES.  Ideally, your  right leg helps narrow that hind leg  to a place directly under your center of gravity. When? During this moment of reach.

Center: Next, your horse's hind leg ENGAGES...or it lands, bends and carries weight. You can see how the rider in this drawing has added weight to the hind leg, and you can see how uphill the horse is as a result. The horse's hind leg is like a coiled spring.

Right: Next, the horse THRUSTS with that coiled right hind leg.  Experienced riders encourage the horse at this moment and get free "BOING!"

You can do it too. Look for these moments within your horse's stride.
This is all about the science of SPRINGS.
