Extreme heat and humidity and other climate-related events have an alarming impact on mental health outcomes in terms of depression and anxiety in Bangladesh, the world’s seventh most vulnerable country to climate change. A study examining this relationship led by Shabab Wahid, DrPH, MPH, an assistant professor in the Department of Global Health at Georgetown’s School of Health, appeared in The Lancet Planetary Health.
Sr. Celeste Mokrzycki and Fr. Mark Bosco delivered the School of Nursing and School of Health’s Values Based Lecture titled “Re-energizing Our Values: Reflecting on the Spirit of Georgetown in Our New Moment.”
Awards and Achievements
McKinney Named Interim Assistant Vice President
Caleb McKinney, PhD, MPS, an associate professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, has been appointed interim assistant vice president of master’s program administration & development. In this newly created GUMC leadership position, McKinney will be responsible for developing a medical center-wide strategy for oversight, marketing, evaluation and quality improvement of existing GUMC biomedical masters and certificate programs, and coordinating stakeholders across the medical center and the broader Georgetown community to develop new programs.

The D.C. Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) will conduct an inspection of Georgetown research laboratories at the end of February. The DOEE may inspect the satellite accumulation area (SAA) in your lab and discuss your waste management process with your lab staff. The GUMC Faculty Group Coaching Pilot Program is designed to support faculty wellness and enhance career satisfaction and engagement. The spring 2023 program is accepting applications for three pilot groups of 8-10 participants each and it will consist of six 90-minute Zoom sessions every other week March 27 - June 5. The Massive Data Institute at the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy welcomes undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals to join a virtual Green Space Data Challenge. Participants will have the month of February to demonstrate the value of green space data by creating analyses, visualizations, and new community indicators. Participants will access various data sources on our Redivis platform in individual or team notebooks to transform green space data into community indicators. Register here.
Periodically, we will spotlight one of Georgetown’s Shared Resources, a pool of state-of-the-art equipment, technical expertise and knowledge available to researchers. The Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR) provides investigators with access to comprehensive flow cytometry, cell sorting and mass cytometry services. Learn more about the FCSR.
Calls for Abstracts
The MedStar Health-Georgetown University Research and Education Symposium will be held May 8 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. The symposium brings together investigators, educators, executive leaders, associates and collaborative partners from across our academic health system to share their research to advance health in our communities. The Second Annual Georgetown Center for Healthy Aging Symposium, “Advancing Knowledge About Aging to Improve Health and Health Care,” will take place July 12. The symposium will include posters, oral presentations and panel discussions on special topics such as new research collaborations, career development, community outreach and grant proposal development.
