Where We've Been & Where We're Going
We've already made it through half of 2020 and though it seems like it flew by, it also feels like years have passed. But no matter how you feel about the time lapse these past six months, together we have been doing amazing work. Because of donors, agencies, government leaders, committees and community members, we have:

  • Created the COVID-19 Community Response Fund in partnership with the Athens Area Community Foundation, and deployed four rounds of grants
  • Launched a podcast, Know Your Neighbor
  • Hosted community calls and trainings
  • Shared information about our 211 program

And that's just a snapshot! As we look to the second half of 2020, we are optimistic. We have seen what our community can do when hit with a crisis and we are seeing the strength of all of you as we work together, because we are BETTER UNITED.
Spotlight on: Early Childhood Success
The school year is upon us (closer for some, farther for others) and our children are - for what feels like the first time - ready to get back to learning. It's hard when you're a parent working from home and teaching your child, when the new math techniques aren't the same as what we learned as kids, and when the monotony of being home together all the time makes it hard to start something new.

We know that encouraging a love of learning in a child is important and that's why we are so proud of the programs in our region. From partners like Boys and Girls Clubs in Athens and Winder-Barrow County offering summer camps and after school programs to the Athens Neighborhood Health Center ensuring our children are healthy enough to learn well to Brightpaths inspiring learning and growing as families and even our own Dolly Parton's Imagination Library instilling a love of reading from birth. We are honored to support programs like these that serve the youngest citizens of Northeast Georgia.
From a Dolly Parton's Imagination Library parent
During our time at home, my children, Isla (age three) and Leo (age one), have benefited from receiving Dolly Parton's Imagination Library books in the mail each month...Their cousins (ages three and five) also receive Imagination Library books, and twice weekly, the three girls video chat with my parents. During these chats, my parents read the girls a book and the girls take turns reading books (with help from mom and dad), too. The three year olds are so thrilled when one reads a Dolly Parton book as they are able to grab the same copy and follow along. These moments unite them even as they are apart. I believe these experiences also unite children in our community as once they are together again, they will have these shared stories in common.
Welcome, Paul Chambers!
We are excited to welcome Paul Chambers with AT&T as our 2021 Campaign Chair. Paul has been in the Northeast Georgia region for his entire life and has served as a Board member for a number of organizations throughout his career. Paul is no beginner when it comes to campaign fundraising, as he served as the United Way of Northeast Georgia Campaign Chair in years past. We are excited to have him joining us again! Take a listen to why Paul is excited to be back serving us at United Way of Northeast Georgia and his vision for this year.
