How Does Real Connection and Engagement Work at a Virtual Conference or Event?

Over the past few months, we have been asked the question "How does real connection and engagement work at a virtual event?"

We have come to realise that there are certainly some immersive experiences to be had when connecting with colleagues through a virtual event platform, and in the past 5 months alone there have been many communication tech companies making it their mission to deliver some pretty fantastic virtual communication solutions that keep people connected through Hybrid and 100% virtual offerings.

For years, the idea of utilising a virtual event platform hadn't gained too much traction within the business events sector itself, knowing that the overwhelming value of PD activities was shared delegate experiences and networking... and this is still certainly true!

However, in such uncertain times, it is clear our association and corporate clients want assurances that they can continue to deliver ongoing PD and engagement opportunities for their staff and members over the coming months, regardless of what may transpire in the world around us.

The GEMS team have reviewed many virtual event platforms to see which of them might come close to replicating the in-person experience. As Event Managers (and with most of us being extroverts), we are all too aware that people need personal connection to innovate, motivate and thrive. We believe that OnAIR delivers the best features to accommodate this need and it is our job to work creatively with each client to bring their events to life, making all attendees feel they belong.

When we dive deeper into the capabilities of OnAIR, we understand that we can facilitate connection through multiple mediums within the platform, which integrate with services such as Microsoft, Twilio, Zoom, GoToWebinar, Vimeo, YouTube and Vonage.

Here are a few examples of what can be achieved at a virtual event...
Live Polling and Session Q&A
Attendees can get involved by answering live polling questions in real time and seeing the results, discussed by the presenter. Throughout any session, ask questions and hear the answers or receive considered responses throughout the day.
Video Networking Groups
To facilitate networking, attendees can be randomly allocated to a social circle with up to 3 other people to discuss their day and what sessions/experiences they've enjoyed most. This is a fantastic way to meet new people, who you might not otherwise cross paths with.
Join Workshop Sessions
During workshop sessions, you can interact with the speaker and other delegates, working toward a collective solution or outcome. These sessions can also be used for networking opportunities.
Connect with Exhibitors
You have the option to message with each exhibitor or set up 1:1 video chat at a time that suits you both. At the click of a button you also have access to download all of the resources provided by the exhibitor.
Engage with Speakers
No need to awkwardly follow that impressive keynote speaker out of the conference room so you have a shot at speaking to them. Connect with them via the OnAIR Meeting Hub and message or video chat with them when you both have the time.
Make Time for Some Virtual Fun...
  • Utilise the OnAIR gamification feature by setting up a competition to engage your delegates
  • Get your trivia thinking cap on
  • Join a cooking or cocktail making class
  • Get the office crew together for pre and post virtual event capers
  • Engage in team challenges. Think office against office for some amusing rivalry!
