As you're reading this issue of Arts Blast
, schedules for the 2020-2021 season are beginning to trickle into the Arts Blast inbox. I'd love to hear from Treasure Coast residents and visitors who were here and searching for something to entertain and inform them twenty-five years ago. It's almost that long that I've been covering the Treasure Coast arts in one form or another and comparing nostalgic notes could be fun. In fact, that sounds like an Arts Blast series in the making!

Going Bananas at Gardenfest!
|
It's difficult to point to what I love most about
Gardenfest! but if pressed, I'd have to say it's always knowing where my old favorites will be.
I've been a fan and customer of Gardenfest! since its beginning 19 years ago and I think I'm safe in saying there hasn't been a year when I didn't make a beeline for
Going Bananas, always on the same corner in Riverside Park. To my credit, I've learned to use Don and Katie's holding section instead of hauling around a couple of banana plants and a bag of fertilizer before heading home. There's also a holding section provided by Gardenfest! plus young people with wagons to get your purchases to your car when you're ready to go home and plant.
|
Garden Club of Indian River County's annual event has climbed to the upper tier of the Treasure Coast's Do-Not-Miss-This list, drawing thousands to the two-day event in Riverside Park, Vero Beach.
Plants for sale will include palms, ferns, orchids, bromeliads, herbs, succulents, bamboo, fruit trees, bonsai, roses and geraniums.
|
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own wagons "to shop for garden gems, and enjoy the amazing vendors, lectures, demonstrations, food, and raffle prizes." Proceeds from Gardenfest! help fund the club’s local student scholarships and community outreach programs aimed at enhancing, preserving and beautifying the landscape of Indian River County plus educating those interested in related topics.
And speaking of educating, the Ask the Experts program has a lineup of free talks. With chairs. In the shade. Saturday's programs include Container Gardening for Shade; Outstanding Roses for Vero Beach, Air Layering Made Simple; and Orchid Care for Beginners. On Sunday, it's Home-grown Flowers and Plants; Tillandsias and Bromeliads; Growing and Cooking With Herbs; and The Value of Worms in Your Gardening /Composting.
Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
|
A note on the Going Bananas website:
All mail orders & shipments ceased as of January 1, 2020. Going Bananas will be open at the nursery on a 'limited hours' basis and appointment only.

And while we're talking about Carnevale ...
|
While the Treasure Coast Community Singers begin rehearsals for their many spring concerts, something interesting just happened. From a TCCS spokesperson:
We actually worked on something else last night - are you going to be at Martin Arts Carnivale 40th anniversary celebration this coming Saturday evening? We got asked to fill in for a cancellation with five days notice. Our group is singing 2 songs - in Italian - that we’ve never sung before. Sounded amazingly good last night...."
Ya gotta love the spirit!
And the absolutely very last call:
will perform Purifoy's Chronicles of Blue and Gray April 18 and 19 and May 23 and they're looking for additional singers to audition. Rehearsals have already begun, but Arts Blast's interested choristers should visit the website or call 772-224-8807 ASAP.

Terry Barber's Back in Town for Carnevale!
|
When I first met countertenor Terry Barber many years ago, I had no idea what a countertenor was. He soon set me straight. Barber, a former member of the outstanding Grammy-winning Chanticleer, will be in Stuart to perform for the Arts Council of Martin County’s Gala, Carnevale di mARTin Feb. 1.
Barber first came to Martin County to be with his ailing mother and then learned to love Stuart for its focus on the arts. His favorite memory of his time here is “Working with kids through the nonprofit I founded, Artists for a Cause (
A4AC.org
). When my mother passed I wanted nothing more than to fight cancer. I also wanted to help other artists use their talent for the benefit of the community.” The singer is very proud of some of the students he knew. “Many of the students I had the pleasure of mentoring have gone on to establish themselves not just as great artists, but exceptional people. I truly believe the Treasure Coast youth talent is on a par with many larger communities I see in the USA.”
|
Although Barber is based near New York City now, he couldn’t resist a call from Nancy Turrell, executive director of the Arts Council. “Nancy and I worked together well when I lived in the area. We are lucky to have her. And she knows that I still support local youth artists
— i
n a few cases … I ‘cast’ gigs from the local community in my professional US tours — and I stay connected and interested in the local arts community. She and Dr. Marie Juriet-Beamish are producing this great celebration of the Arts Council, so of course I was delighted to be asked.”
For the event, Barber will be partnered with Lorrianna Colozzo in “some recognizable Italian songs, classical and popular in nature. It will be my first time singing “Volare”. I am a fan of the Pavarotti recording.” Of Colozzo Barber says, “She’s tremendous. She and I have been drawn together artistically on several occasions. I love her ability to tackle many styles. We agree on a lot artistically and are friends, too, which makes it even more fun.” His attire for the evening will be white tie and tails, maybe a mask. “My tailcoat is from 1998 when I joined Chanticleer.”
|
Barber will be back April 17 for an appearance at the Lyric Theatre despite a crammed schedule: “I’m 30 solo concert tour dates over my quota this season (fall-spring), with over 80 tour dates (6 different programs ranging from classical to musical theatre and rock) in the USA and Canada mainly. My newest program is 'Mercury, giving the audience a chance to get to know Queen’s front man in a rock concert, where I am the lead singer.” He won’t be alone on stage. “The group includes not only a couple of 'best of' musicians from the Treasure Coast (Jonathan Cummings and Robert “Bones” Moltedo) but also the Oakridge Boys’ lead guitarist, Don Carr and recent TONY winner, Grace Field.”
Keep up with Barber on social media:

Leaders of the
Museum of Chinese in American
(MOCA) on New York City’s Lower East Side are still grappling with the effects of a devastating five-alarm fire at its storage facility late Thursday night (January 23). The blaze may have destroyed up to 85,000 invaluable historical items and ephemera that collectively tell the story of more than a century of Chinese immigration in the US.

Eleanor Roosevelt
Comes to Town
|
Every year, Florida Humanities Council's free programs introduce audiences around the state to Florida's history and current events. Many feature performers/lecturers who wear the fashion of the day and speak in the voice of a character in their story.
This season, the
Vero Beach chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW) has reached across the country for a special fundraiser at Vero Beach Theatre Guild Feb. 16.
In playwright Sharon Whitney's,"Across a Barrier of Fear: The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt," Mrs. Roosevelt is portrayed by Jane VanBoskirk, a frequent presenter for the
Oregon Council for the Humanities.
|
VanBoskirk remembers listening to Mrs. Roosevelt on the radio. "
My parents were big fans of hers so naturally I listened closely and was drawn to her humanity."
When the actress met Whitney in the 1980s, the two clicked and became fast friends, VanBoskirk said. They knew they wanted to work together but couldn't decide which historical character to collaborate on. "
While Sharon was teaching at Choate, she was wandering around its library and came upon a book that she had written on Eleanor. The book's cover was a picture of Eleanor in her 50s, and in a 'Eureka' moment, she said 'Jane!'"
|
For VanBoskrk, acting came before her interest in history. "
I first was inspired to create drama with my older brother, who later in life was an accomplished pianist, composer, and music professor. We created plays with music together and recorded them on a tape recorder for the amusement of our family." In college and during summer breaks, she got involved with historical dramas and found herself in the company of inspiring people. "I had wonderful history professors in college who created a passion in me for making history come alive."
VanBoskirk is in the Southeast through March, touring her show in seven states. In Florida, in addition to appearing in Vero Beach, she will be doing fundraisers for the AAUW in Venice and Lake Wales.
