A Big Family: Growing Up in a Cooperative Community
By David Gordon, Cantine’s Island Cohousing
This Hudson Valley One article profiles a well-established intergenerational cohousing community in Saugerties, NY. Home to 18 households with members age 1 to 85, Cantine's Island Cohousing offers a supportive environmental for families.

" We move for work and lifestyle, and the support extended family can provide has to be made up for in other (usually very expensive) ways, or foregone. Cohousing, at least for families, can be a creative way to solve some basic needs created by the disruption of traditional settlement patterns.

The Cantine’s Island community has a lot to offer parents with young children, from built-in babysitters to play areas and companionship for the kids. Cohousing offers the opportunity to share experiences and advice, as well as contact with an older generation that has raised children."

Lisa, Jonah and Milo Knight, our 24th member household
The Knight family moved to Fair Oaks from Maryland in July 2016.
LISA grew up outside Washington, D.C. She works as a writer-editor for the U.S. Department of the Interior, and volunteered for a job transfer last year (which is what brought the family to California). She enjoys reading, exploring, pop culture, and baking. She and Jonah met on the set of an independent movie in Colorado, and before Milo was born they ran a theater company in Frederick, Maryland.

JONAH spent about six years as a playwright/theater producer. Among other activities, he spent three seasons in The Kennedy Center's emerging playwrights program. When Milo was born, he became the at-home parent and transitioned into becoming a touring singer/songwriter. After recording a number of albums, he became interested in health and nutrition. He earned several certifications and began teaching nutrition at a regional Maryland college.
MILO is a third grader at Riverview STEM Academy in Rancho Cordova, where he loves the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum. His favorite subject is math, and his dream career is to engineer space travel. He plans to be a frequent baker in the Club House.

Stay tuned next newsletter to meet Kim Ridge, our 25th member!
