The Most Joyous Time of the Year at LUM
How LUM Brings Hope to Our Neighbors in Need
|
As October begins, the leaves are turning brilliant shades of red and gold, and cooler weather signals the approach of a critical season for Lafayette Urban Ministry. You might assume that this is the most difficult time of year for LUM, with increasing needs for shelter, food, and financial assistance—but in truth, it’s the most joyous. It’s a time when we can make a significant impact: keeping families housed, offering warmth and safety during the coldest months, and ensuring children experience the joy of Christmas.
Starting November 15, the LUM Winter Warming Station will be open nightly from midnight to 7 a.m. through April 15. As temperatures drop, this crucial program provides a safe and warm space for anyone in need. It complements the Emergency Shelter, offering additional capacity during the harshest months of winter. Thanks to the ongoing support of volunteers, meal providers, and donors, this life-saving service continues to make a positive impact on our community.
The Community Thanksgiving Feast brings hundreds together for a warm meal and a sense of connection on November 28, Thanksgiving Day. It is more than just food—it’s about fellowship and belonging. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donors, this event ensures no one is left out during the holiday season. By joining together, we foster a community where everyone feels included and valued, making the Thanksgiving celebration a time of unity and shared joy for all.
Jubilee Christmas, on December 14, serves more than 600 families and 1,850 children with toys, food gift cards, and homemade cookies. Most importantly, it gives parents the joy of being Christmas morning heroes while easing their financial burdens, allowing them to stay current on bills. Jubilee Christmas helps families embrace the season’s joy without sacrificing stability. Your donations, volunteer efforts, or financial support will ensure Christmas is magical for families across our community.

The winter season is the most rewarding time of year for LUM. With programs like the Winter Warming Station, Community Thanksgiving Feast, and Jubilee Christmas, LUM brings the joy, hope, and dignity to our neighbors who need it most. By keeping families housed, offering warmth & shelter, and making Christmas possible for children, the work of LUM is a powerful reminder of what our community can accomplish together. LUM invites you to join us this season—whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading the word—to be part of the joy that comes from making a real, lasting impact in people’s lives. Together, we can bring hope and warmth to those who need it most.
