Scheduled childbirth may greatly reduce preeclampsia, a leading cause of maternal death


According to research published in Hypertension, more than half of preeclampsia cases that develop between weeks 37 through 42 of pregnancy could be prevented with scheduled childbirth. Using either Caesarian deliveries or scheduled inductions could help to reduce this dangerous form of high blood pressure, which is a leading cause of maternal death. Although C-sections and inductions are widely used for other reasons, they’re typically not used as a strategy for preventing at-term preeclampsia, though these findings may encourage providers to reconsider their approach.

Nurse shortage named “global health emergency”


According to a 2023 International Council of Nurses report, roughly 13 million nurses will need to be replaced in the coming years. The report notes that for nurses, the staffing issue is not an acute or distant issue, but rather a pervasive issue that’s significantly impacting morale and mental health. Based on the data presented, the report authors urged officials to consider the current staffing crisis a “global health emergency,” calling for policymakers to enact changes that would rebuild the healthcare system and support the nurse workforce.

What makes the immune systems of prematurely born babies susceptible to deadly infections?


The earlier babies are born, the more at risk they are for serious infections and complications. Recently, a German physician discovered exactly what it is about premature babies’ immune systems that makes them more prone to these issues. In babies born preterm, neutrophils, or cells in the innate immune system, are essentially shut off, and an imbalance exists in immunoregulatory signaling pathways. Although these findings are still very new, they could hold potential for establishing therapeutic interventions in the future to safeguard premature babies against serious infections.
