NEWS

Waiting for light

In rural communities of Mozambique and Madagascar, giving birth at night without electricity is dangerous—but Solar Suitcases bring light, power, and safety to mothers and babies.

Click the video to learn about how Nurse Itelvina delivers babies at a health clinic in Mozambique where electricity is unreliable. Hear the challenges she faces without adequate light, and how a Solar Suitcase will make it safe for moms and babies.

EVENTS

Join the Wild Ride - be a light of change!

Until October 4, Canadians are joining Alongside Hope’s fourth annual Wild Ride — a joyful movement supporting safe births in Mozambique and Madagascar.

So far, 18 teams and 37 participants have raised over $18, 800 by walking, baking, crocheting, and cycling for mothers and babies. From Betty in the Yukon crocheting baby blankets, to Nora in Halifax baking bread, to Team Pedal Power biking long miles, each act is helping bring brighter beginnings across the globe.

Since 2020, Suzanne, Janice, and Kim have been the ‘Praying Team.’ This year, Suzanne Rumsey takes on 810 km of cycling in the Wild Ride, joining her teammates to span the distance from Mozambique to Madagascar.

Join us for Praying with Alongside Hope

All are welcome to join our online parish. Hundreds have prayed with us from across Canada. Our reflector will be Beth Lorimer, KAIROS Ecological Justice Program Coordinator and a former member of the Alongside Hope youth council.

Join the Becoming Kin Book Study!

This fall, join Alongside Hope for a six-part online book study as part of our 2025 learning journey, Living Into Right Relationships. We’ll be reading Becoming Kin by Patty Krawec, an Indigenous writer who invites us to reimagine kinship, land, and solidarity through the lens of history, memory, and Indigenous ways of knowing. The book is available at libraries, bookstores, and on Audible.ca.

Each night's discussion will be led by a different Alongside Hope volunteer or staffer:

September 15 - Nancy Denham

September 22 - Debbie Clevett

September 29 - Heather Wilks Jenkins

October 6 - Suzanne Rumsey

October 15 - Tom Mugford

October 20 - John Denham

Thursday, September 25, 2025, 7 p.m. ET

Alongside Hope Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting will be held by Zoom for voting members and live streamed on our YouTube channel. All are welcome to attend. Members will consider the audited financial statements for FY2024-2025 and the auditor’s report, elect directors, appoint honorary associates and appoint the auditor for FY2025-26.

We will also hear from special guest speakers, Abe Janzen and Henry Reinders, the Calgary and Ontario Regional Representatives for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Abe and Henry will co-share from their experiences of engaging parishioners in our ecumenical work that inspires donors, including the Canadian Government, towards effective programs and partnerships in our mission together, to End Hunger.
