Young Oregon track and field athletes have a unique opportunity to qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships meet scheduled for July 24-30 at Hayward Field in Eugene, OR.
The National Junior Olympic Championships is one of the largest track and field meets for youth in the world. The meet features the best U.S. athletes ages 7 to 18 years.
Oregon youth have an exceptional opportunity to qualify for the meet due to a special Regional meet that is allowed by USATF. This special USATF Oregon Region 16 Track and Field Championships qualifying meet will only have Oregon youth competing against each other to qualify for the National Championships. Here are the key steps:
-
Athletes who advance will register for the USATF Oregon Region 16 Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships on July 6-9 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, OR. The top five finishers in individual and relay events along with the top two finishers in the multi-events advance to the National Junior Olympics Championships.
Athletes needing a waiver through to the Region 16 meet, should have a parent email youth@oregon.usatf.org and membership@oregon.usatf.org. Include the athlete’s name, date of birth, membership number, and the reason for the needed waiver. The waiver is for athletes who have a valid reason to miss the Oregon Association Junior Olympics Championships Meet.
Athletes that want to compete in the Multi-Events, Hammer, and Steeplechase, will need to register for the Oregon Association Junior Olympic Championships Meet and email youth@oregon.usatf.org and membership@oregon.usatf.org. These events will not be contested at the Association Meet level, but meet registration is required to compete at the Region 16 Meet.
You can contact the USATF Oregon Association for additional information: youth@oregon.usaft.org. TrackTown USA is the local organizing committee for the National JO Championships. Go here to volunteer for the meet.
