A community is built through kindness.
Kindness creates connections, understanding, and a sense of togetherness. It is through kindness that we experience belonging and grow a welcoming, inclusive, and strong community.
What better time for each of us to make a renewed commitment to our community than at the start of a new year?
Here are some ideas:
-
Share a Smile or Kind Word: A smile and a simple “hello” can show welcome and brighten someone’s day.
-
Participate: Find out what is happening around town, whether it is an event, activity, cause, or volunteer opportunity, and join in.
-
Practice Empathy: Take a moment to listen without judgment and better understand the experiences of others.
-
Be Patient and Forgiving: We all have challenging moments. Offer kindness instead of frustration. Others are likely going through more than you know.
-
Pay It Forward: When someone shows you kindness, think about how you can do the same for someone else.
Your actions can inspire others. I am continually inspired by your generosity and commitment to a community where people with developmental disabilities and their families can live as respected, included, and contributing members.
There is more to do. Isolation, loneliness, and feelings of exclusion affect us all – and they are on the rise – yet these are preventable social issues.
The solutions start with kindness.
Sincerely,
