CHAMBER UPDATES | JANUARY 28, 2022
Chamber Members,

Do you remember hearing the following as a kid? "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Superman!" Who can forget those iconic words? Last week I heard the full version of the theme from Gilligan's Island as well as C.W. McCall's infamous CB radio song CONVOY! I found myself singing the words out loud, as I did so long ago and it got me thinking about other childhood memories. As this time of year rolled around, my mom would look forward to the Academy Award nominations and inevitably would hear her excitement, "The Oscars will be on Sunday night!" which meantthat we would have our front row seat in front of the TV to see who would win the best actor, actress, director, and of course the best picture of the year.

As many of you know, I have a large movie collection and enjoy various genres from comedy and drama to science fiction and action films. I grew up with WWII films like Patton, The Dirty Dozen and The Great Escape as well as Vietnam era movies like Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. Do you remember the last war movie to win an Oscar? Yes, it was Hurt Locker in 2008 and yes, Patton did win for best picture in 1970.

Our upcoming awards dinner on Feb 17th at Pebble Creek will be an opportunity for us to celebrate business across the community. As a reminder the Colerain Chamber has three core focuses: Connect, Support, and Celebrate. Whether your business was nominated or not and regardless of being named the winner, we should be celebrating EVERYONE across the area for getting through the past two years and still have their doors open. When I first arrived from Illinois in early 2020, I asked many of you whether your business was thriving, surviving, or hurting? Thankfully most of you fell into the surviving or thriving category, but we certainly have seen businesses close since the declaration of the COVID pandemic; we've seen many get started as well.

My point as I think back to the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Tony, or various other awards dinners is that only a small percentage in the audience (or at home) actually receive the accolades from the stage. The reality is that the majority, whether nominated or not, knew that they were creating the best movie, TV show, song, or stage play and hopefully deserving of a future award. It often inspired film makers or a youngster at home to go out and do better the following year, hone their craft, or maybe in our case produce an even better product or reliable service. My hope is that our community embraces the process this year like no other. Rather than looking at our awards process as a win-or-lose competitive event, my hope is that all of you are able to look around the room and see that we have an amazing community filled with business leaders in many categories.

Registration for the event is filling quickly and I am so thankful for our many sponsors and supporters which have given me the confidence that we are heading the right way. I am thankful for those that helped with the nomination and selection process (held confidentially) and for those that are working feverishly (which in COVID times is not likely the best choice of terms) to make this an amazing evening for everyone involved. In the meantime, please take a look at all that we have going on below and let us know if there is something we can do to help your business.

If you recall the movie, It's A Wonderful Life, there is a classic scene when the Baily Building and Loan team celebrate surviving the run on the bank and have "Mama Dollar and Papa Dollar" left. They sing, dance and laugh, then put them in the vault for safe keeping. Please take a moment and celebrate all that you have accomplished; you deserve to do that given all the circumstances you are dealing with. We'll look forward to seeing you at the Oscars...I mean the Colerain Chamber of Commerce awards dinner. 🙂

Ohio to Begin Incentivising Employers to Create Work Based Learning Opportunities for High School Students

Ohio Governor DeWine has signed into law SB 166 which will go into effect in March 2022. This new law will allow businesses to better meet their employment needs by offering tax and workers compensation incentives to Ohio employers that create “Work Based Learning” (“WBL”) opportunities for high school students.

Work-based learning is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experience where they can apply academic and technical skills. WBL integrates the school curriculum with the workplace to foster skill-development, the achievement of credentials, and long-term employability.
