Learning how and when to use protection orders empowers individuals to take action to prevent those in crisis from hurting themselves or others. Reduce the Risk works to spread awareness and educate Californians about these protection orders to equip them with the necessary tools to break the cycle of gun violence. It is everyone’s civic duty to take action when you notice potential warning signs. Together we can protect our communities from gun violence and prevent tragedies.

| Recognizing Warning Signs | | Recognizing warning signs when someone is at risk of harming themselves or others is the first step in preventing gun violence and other firearm-related tragedies.
Studies also show that those individuals in crisis who pose a risk of self-harm exhibit many warning signs as well. Some common warning signs may include:
- Talking about self-harm or harming others
- Sudden changes in mood or behaviors
- Visiting websites that include themes of violence, suicide or mass shootings

| | | | | | | | | Our Youth Advisory Council is composed of youth leaders in gun violence prevention who lend their expertise and perspective to help guide critical initiatives throughout the campaign. This month we would like to introduce Maxwell Martinez, an active advocate for gun violence prevention and member of the Reduce the Risk Youth Advisory Council. Martinez is a recent graduate from Chico State University who was injured during a shooting that occurred at a house party near campus in 2022. As a survivor of gun violence, he serves as a vital member of the Reduce the Risk Youth Advisory Council, where he leverages his personal experience and passion for gun violence prevention to bring insight and perspective to the campaign.
