How We Can Help Your State Use Medicaid Reentry Waivers Effectively

We conducted the first nationwide and state-by-state analysis of eligibility for Medicaid reentry waivers, and it shows that nearly 2 million people each year will be eligible to receive services through this “once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

For the first time, through these waivers, 19 states can now use Medicaid funding to cover prescriptions, treatment, and case management before release. This isn’t just good for public health—it's good for public safety. By improving a person’s health, we reduce the likelihood and cost of recidivism.

States like Arizona are already using these Medicaid waivers. The CSG Justice Center is looking for a handful of states and counties that want to work together to accelerate implementation and share lessons learned so other states can rethink their reentry services We recently convened Medicaid officials, corrections directors, sheriffs, and other public health or reentry leaders from 13 states to come up with strategies and next steps for making the most of these waivers.

Read our latest post to explore the eligibility data for your state, identify your next steps, and learn how we can help your state use these waivers effectively.
